Tbh, I like taking risks with my work. I don’t want to just do the same thing again and again. When @miamia07 approached me to take part in this wonderful exhibition at #centrodeartesgallery , it was an instant yes and an opportunity to try something new! We talked about community and watching streaming TikToks of dances at pulgas. This work was born of this conversation.
The sensation of going to a makeshift dance, to converge at invented third spaces. To see and be seen. To put on your best clothes and maybe catch the eye of someone who catches your eye.

Does this work? I think it does, but I’m excited that I don’t really know yet if it does. Like being at these dances, it’s a risk of failure and a chance for the reward of finding something new.

Centro de Artes Gallery
At historic market square
San Antonio, Texas

Please join us at the opening reception for Mercado/Material on Thursday, October 15 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Centro de Artes Gallery in Historic Market Square. In this exhibition, curator Mia Lopez generates conversations around the aesthetics of Latinidad and the nuances of cultural heritage. It features 16 artists who use vibrant imagery and popular culture as a vehicle to address themes of their Latinx cultural identity and consumerism. By drawing upon the rich cultural history of the site of Centro de Artes Gallery, from its early days as a place of agricultural commerce to its current iteration as Market Square, the exhibition explores the visual culture that is abundant in the market through a new lens.

Curated by @miamia07

Also, I had to figure out how I would get this work to San Antonio and realized that I would have to do as we do. In many many pieces.
This allowed me to consider each floor section as its own individual painting that when assembled makes a massive floor painting.

Also, using oil sticks on metallic wallpaper on wood panels was really fun thing to try and make work!

Plus I just love being ambitious wi taken in Historic Market Square by @testotesto3

"Man Makes Plans" is a boardroom populated with outsiders responding to decisions already made, where artists Jesus Benavente and David Howe use political spectacle, humor, disaster imagery, and social exchange to explore the fragility embedded within power, the resilience found in resourcefulness, and how nature can unravel even the most carefully laid plans.

Jesus Benavente's interdisciplinary approach uses a disarming charismatic casualness that meets viewers where they are and tilts their understanding of the world they know to be true. His works blur distinctions between art history, culture, and collective everyday life, accumulating into a visual record of labor, memory, humor, and persistence. Humor becomes a form of connection, inviting participation while softening the boundaries between himself and the viewer. Visitors move through the works gathering meaning from fragments, stories, and repeated images to bring them to precipice of where he is asking them to be. Then he dares them to make the leap.

No Me Queda Mas
Neon Video (two angled 65” monitors), 2026

NuestroWorld is having its big closing on Friday. It’s been a tremendous show, that I was so so lucky to be able to do with @diverseworks . Its been a dream to do. I hope that I can see you at the closing. Please come.

This is had this work brewing in my back pocket for a long time, and it finally made sense to make it. This work is about that sensation of putting it all out there, having nothing left, and it still not being enough. It’s about Selena reaching a peak and it being taken away from her. It’s a kind of heartbreak we know too well. taken in Houston, Texas by @testotesto3

I wanted to highlight this work and reveal a work from within that work from my @diverseworks show #nuestroworld, because it isn’t as immediately visible.
NUESTROWORLD AMUSEMENT GUIDE is a map (what kind of amusement park doesn’t have a great map?) I made that has many readymade sculptures/performances/sound art that I have put together. Using the map becomes a kind of performance where viewers complete the work upon finding and recognizing these readymades throughout the city. Here is one selection from the various amusements and what you will likely find if you arrive early enough.

Plus there’s also a great essay by @ashleydelara in the guide that you should definitely read.

The maps can be picked up at my show’s location at NUESTROWORLD VISITOR CENTER at 5601 b navigation blvd, Houston, tx

Now open at 5601 B Navigation Blvd, NUESTROWORLD is a satirical solo installation by Brooklyn-based artist Jesus Benavente (@testotesto3) that transforms Houston into an amusement park—and asks us to reconsider the tourism, branding, memories, and myths that shape our city.

Through humor, nostalgia, and critical reflection, the exhibition revisits moments ranging from the Astrodome and Astroworld to Selena and the folklore surrounding Santa Anna’s capture.

“The World Is Ours”—and so are its stories.
