That's a wrap on Summer Sea Term 2026!

We loaded the buses this morning in Castine and are taking off from Bangor, Maine on the charter flights back to Houston. We wish to thank Admiral Johnson, Captain Mac and the entire crew and team at Maine Maritime Academy for their hospitality, professionalism, and dedication to getting the job done.

Greetings from aboard the TS State of Maine in New York Harbor!

We were steered in by Sandy Hook Senior Apprentice Pilot and TAMMA Graduate Roy Shaw IV ’18. In 11 more transits of the Ambrose Channel, he will complete his apprenticeship. The ship is securely anchored off Staten Island in the Stapleton Anchorage, where we will take on as much ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel as the ship can hold before heading back out prior to our return on July 3rd.

It is the calm before the 4th! The harbor is mostly empty, awaiting 60 United States and International Naval ships and over 30 tall ships for OpSail 250! The TS-SOM will be anchored just off Jersey City, north of Ellis Island, in a prime viewing location for the festivities. Excitement is building onboard as we get closer to this amazing event. by @texasmaritime

Greetings from aboard the TS State of Maine,

All is well aboard after a fun port call in Ft. Lauderdale. It was great to see our TAMMA Parents Association and all of our supporters. The ship is back in an at-sea routine, and the cadets continue to learn, operate, and train aboard this great new ship. Just being aboard is upping my excitement for the TS Lone Star State, only a few short months away. The TAMMA team aboard has copious notes and ideas on how to make the TS Lone Star State home, and how to maximize the outstanding capabilities of this new training platform.

SCHEDULE UPDATE

The TS State of Maine will be heading into New York Harbor on June 29th to Stapleton Anchorage to bunker fuel. The ship will be topping off her tanks for the remainder of the sea term and the long winter ahead. Once full, we will head back out to sea.

We will be returning to NY Harbor on July 3rd to a special anchorage where we can view the Sail 250 parade of ships on July 4th. The TS-SOM will then join the end of the parade and follow it out to sea.

Capt. Mac will turn our bow north toward Boston, where we will dock at the Black Falcon Cruise Terminal on July 6th, with departure now scheduled for July 9th.

The TS-SOM will make her inaugural arrival in Castine, ME on the morning of July 12th. SST 2026 will end on July 16th and our cadets will fly home as previously planned. by @texasmaritime

Sea Trial Updates: Captain Gives TS LONE STAR STATE High Marks! Whoop!

The TS LONE STAR STATE has returned from sea trials this week after spending several days off the coast of Delaware and Virginia testing propulsion and safety systems.

Capt. Wade Howell and team report that all went well, and only minor deficiencies needed to be corrected before delivery.

Capt. Howell also reports that the ship is nearing full completion and that additional system startup and commissioning is ongoing.

We look forward to seeing the ship in Galveston at the end of the summer.

The TS Lone Star State has departed Hanwha Philly Shipyard to begin her builder's sea trials. Capt. Wade Howell and a select crew are observing the shipyard team as the builder puts the ship through its paces. Over the next several days, the ship will test all the systems that make her operational and safe.

This includes evacuation and safety protocols, alongside engine, control, and hotel systems such as potable water, toilets, and HVAC. The ship will transit the Delaware River and anchor before proceeding to sea to conduct a series of offshore endurance runs at full speed. These trials include stress-testing the steering at full speed and executing a crash stop to determine the distance required to stop from full ahead, ensuring the machinery can handle the maneuver.

SST Blog #4:

As of the last update, the TS STATE OF MAINE had completed anchor training and was headed for a port call in Charleston, South Carolina. We were expecting some increased seas in a few days, but nothing like what we encountered.

Two days out, we crossed a storm front that produced the most intense lightning displays some of us have ever seen at sea. The announcement to clear the decks was made, and a few minutes later, we could hear the winds pick up to nearly 60 knots. The Training Bridge began to fill with cadets. At first, they were amazed at the storm. Then, after a few minutes, the conversations turned to ship handling in heavy weather, navigation, and meteorology. Questions were asked by the cadets that the extra faculty and crew were eager to answer. This led to one of the best learning sessions of the trip. These future officers are on their way to becoming seasoned mariners more and more each day.

Thursday morning was clear and beautiful for our arrival. The rails were manned in formal uniforms, and a salute was issued to Fort Sumter as it passed by. After our arrival, we reprovisioned the ship, sent the trash ashore, and the call for Liberty went out on the PA.

Now, after three days of rest, the ship has made its way to sea with the nearly 600 cadets, faculty, and crew looking forward to the passage north and St. John's, Newfoundland, next weekend. by @texasmaritime
