Big news, Longhorns! We just launched what is believed to be the first undergraduate robotics program in the country that allows high school students to apply directly as part of their freshman admissions application. If you’re interested in doing hands-on robotics research, earning a minor in robotics and learning from world-class faculty, follow the link in our bio or contact robotics@utexas.edu. 🤘🤖

Five billion people—nearly two-thirds of the world’s population—don’t have access to safe surgery. But what if robots could change that? Earlier this spring, I visited @texasrobotics in Austin, where I met young researchers who are on a mission to revolutionize healthcare through robotics.

Some students are researching how robotics can help surgeons do their job safely and more effectively, and even how robots can complete surgical tasks on their own. Other students are using robotics to develop better prosthetics or detect cancers. What do all of these innovations have in common? They could one day transform our lives—or even save them.

What stood out to me as I learned about their incredible work is how important it is to ensure students of all backgrounds can pursue opportunities in tech and robotics. As a computer scientist, I’ve seen firsthand that when we have innovators from all backgrounds, we get solutions that benefit everyone. It’s clear that Texas Robotics is leading the way in making robotics and tech more inclusive, and I’m excited to see how they’ll continue shaping the future.

What if we told you these robots play soccer all on their own? ⚽🤖

UT Austin Villa returned from RoboCup 2026 with a fourth-place finish in the world's largest robotics competition. Their humanoid robots made every decision on the field independently, using computer vision, reinforcement learning and game theory to work together and adapt to their opponents in real time.

Texas Robotics is proud to congratulate Bill Fan, Luisa Mao, and Caden Page on being named recipients of the 2026 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, one of the most prestigious and competitive awards available to early-career researchers in the United States.

Established in 1952, the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program recognizes students pursuing research-based degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, selected from a highly competitive pool of nearly 14,000 applicants nationwide. Each fellowship provides three years of financial support over a five-year period.

Having three Texas Robotics students, at both the undergraduate and graduate level, recognized among this year's recipients is a testament to the caliber of our community. We congratulate Caden, Bill, and Luisa on this well-deserved recognition and look forward to the contributions they will make to the field of robotics and beyond.
