Got a fossil? Let’s find out! 🔎🦴

Celebrate National Fossil Day™ on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at @texassciencemuseum! Bring something you think might be a fossilized plant or animal, and let our paleontologists help identify your find.

Last year’s finds ranged from Cretaceous oysters and ammonites to Pleistocene mammal fossils—including a mastodon molar and bison teeth and foot bones! Other discoveries included crinoid stems, ancient marine shells and fish bones. What might your find reveal?

Don’t have a fossil? Bring your questions and curiosity!

Identification sessions take place between 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m.

*Fossil identifications are for educational purposes only. Texas Science & Natural History Museum staff do not provide authentications (“Certificates of Authenticity”) or appraisals for monetary (market) value or for legal purposes. taken in Texas Science & Natural History Museum by @texassciencemuseum

🦖💚 There’s one thing we DID know: We’re really going to miss Dr. Liam!

After countless fossils, dinosaurs, surprising discoveries and plenty of things that made us say “I Didn’t Know That!”, our favorite friendly neighborhood paleontologist @brontonorris is heading off on a brand-new adventure.

Of course, we couldn’t let him leave without one final lesson, so Dr. Liam turned the tables and put OUR prehistoric knowledge to the test with the I Didn’t Know That Game Show! 🦕🧠🏆

Think you know your dinosaurs? Play along with us and test YOUR knowledge! Head to the link in our bio to watch the full game show and see if you can beat Trevor and Sierra’s scores. 👀

Liam, thank you for making learning ridiculously fun, for always being game for our silliness and for becoming such a special part of our We Are Austin family. We can’t wait to see what you unearth in this next chapter. ❤️

And remember, friends: @texassciencemuseum isn’t going anywhere! Go explore, get curious and keep saying, “I didn’t know that!” 🔎🦴✨ taken in We Are Austin by @texassciencemuseum

We’re making tracks!

You may notice a few changes around the museum starting this week, as construction is beginning on our new Sarah and Ernest Butler Dinosaur Trackways Building.

The new building will house one of Texas’s most iconic fossil discoveries: 113-million-year-old dinosaur trackways discovered near Glen Rose, Texas. Preserved in limestone during the Early Cretaceous Period, the footprints were left by a massive sauropod dinosaur and a theropod dinosaur.

This state-of-the-art facility will provide a protected environment and allow visitors to walk around the trackways for the first time since they were lifted from the bed of the Paluxy River.

Learn more at the link, and stay tuned as construction gets underway!

Have you found something that might be a fossilized plant or animal? Bring it to the museum for in-person identification by a paleontologist on National Fossil Day™, Wednesday, Oct. 14!

Our paleontologists will be available for in-person fossil identification sessions from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. Regular admission fees apply.

Past visitors have brought mammoth tusk fragments, fossil wood, ancient marine shells, shark teeth and mosasaur bones—along with modern animal bones and plenty of intriguing rocks.

If you can’t make it to the museum on National Fossil Day, you can make an appointment for an in-person identification with a paleontologist in the Discovery Center by emailing TMMCollections@austin.utexas.edu.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our first Titan Talk of the season: The Power of Bat Conservation. 🦇 We loved seeing so many museum members and friends!

Dr. Karin Akre of @batconservationinternational took us on a journey through the remarkable diversity of bats, the critical roles they play in ecosystems around the world and the work underway to protect them. Dr. Amanda Adams, BCI’s Director of Research Coordination, also shared valuable insights during the audience Q&A.

Thank you both experts as well as to Huntington Bank, whose generous support makes the #TitanTalks lecture series possible.

What do you get when you cross an armadillo with an alligator? Meet 𝘓𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘴! 🐊

This armored aetosaur lived about 230 million years ago during the Late Triassic. A relative of modern crocodiles, 𝘓𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘴 had protective bones embedded in its skin and a flat, upturned snout that helped it uproot plants.

See an artist’s representation of 𝘓𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘴 brought to life in our new Featured Creatures digital animations—and discover more animals from prehistoric Texas at Texas Science & Natural History Museum.
