I had the best time a couple of weeks ago going to London on the sleeper for a brilliant masterclass from @ceres_naturaldyesprints on natural printing. Yes these colours are from natural dye pastes! Can’t wait to explore more layering and colour generation potentials.

Workshop: Print a Silk Neckerchief

When? Tuesday 30th June 10am - 4pm (why go to work when you can get creative?!)

This first workshop is running at a mega discount too! This is because I’m also using it to gather marketing imagery and finalise timings, meaning you’ll get a bargain. It would make a great gift for Father’s Day. Neckerchiefs are very fetching on folks. Mean theirs famously neckerchief wearing royalty in the like of Richard Ayoade and Jessica Fletcher (murder she wrote).

Been making some bits and pieces this past week or so for the Spring Market at @deemouthartiststudios this May. Are you coming?

I’ll also be doing a destash of fabrics, threads etc. so if you like making this is for you too 🧵🪡🧶

Polychromatic Printing / Dye Mono Printing

Anyone fancy it? Shall I do a workshop with this great technique?

Back in the day I doubt anyone knew that when I was designing prints that sold to the likes of Nike that this was all happening from a windowless cupboard in a flat in Aberdeen with my furry Alfie by my side. We’ve all got to start somewhere! From there to my home studio, then my sunny shedio, to my first stand alone studio and my now space in Torry’s bubbling creative hub. It’s been very gradual but I’m still wanting to grow (that 4m repeat printing table will be mine one day!). Why not come see my current studio? Get hands on with my designs and nosey through artwork? You can this May.

Looking back Thursday in the studio. I didn’t have long but managed to get my first madder extract paste made up and test printed [I’ve been using crushed root before but extracts meant to be bolder].

I’ve also tested out some pomegranate print paste made from the waste skins.

Looking forward to seeing their true colour once steam set.

I often get asked at open studios if I workout in the studio, because I have weights. Nope I workout nowhere! I use the weights to keep the screens still.

The most clicked on page on my website is the Orange Line Drum Lampshade 🍊 Made to Order and dispatched within a week (depending on fabric stock) it’s always been a winner. But have you ever thought about making your own lampshade?

Day in the life on a studio day as a small designer with a small person in tow.

It was a very productive day! Only a couple of hiccups on this stormy one, so a winner!

First it’s getting Finlay ready for school, running at the cows tail to get him to the school bus then me and Edie head to the studio.

Arrived to some beautiful samples from @merchantandmills.

It was a day of making some print pastes from things I gathered - Small pine cone things that I found on the ground (not acorns I need to change that in my book 👀), Lilac from my garden + red onion skins from my brother. Excited to print with them!

Of course I had to test out my new to me Meakin cups several times throughout the day. Mean is it even a textiles studio without tea?

Home to get the tea on and test some fabric I was given. It looked and felt like a lovely boiled wool but by doing a flame test I found it was difficult to ignite, it self extinguished and it had a smell like burning hair = Wool!

Time for a quick doodle then off to take my son to his football. I stayed in the car with my hot water bottle, perks of making my own covers. It was still warm after an hour!

Then home for the kids bedtime routine and a bit of tax return admin, wild.

It’s always a mixed day of tasks when at the studio as I’ve to fit so much in to the 5hours between school drop off and pick up. Is there anything else you’d like to see from studio times?

💡Lampshade making - I’ve had 6 folks enquire about this one in the last 2 weeks but only 2 spaces left so be quick if you want to get on this one.

🫟Intro to screen printing - learn the principles of screen printing on fabric and go away with some samples you’ve printed! A great starter if you’re not sure that printing is for you.

👩🏻‍🎨Print Table Hire Project Block - 4 weeks - This one’s for folks who have printed before and want to use the facilities to explore their own ideas. There is no teaching involved with this booking - max 2 people.
