Yes, we know how lucky we are - getting to travel for projects, seeing interesting places and meeting the most inspiring people for work!

The 2026 Tracks4Crafts consortium meeting took place in Bucharest, Romania, 6-9 October. We met up with project partners, visited Semne Cusute’s Atelier, the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant, and learned about Romania’s rich and colourful textile traditions.

Our collaborators from Politecnico di Milano presented a portable “Material Library” with samples from all pilot cases. We’re in there too with seaweed, wool and samples from projects like “Fjólublár” (Living Purple).

Thank you Ioana and Gabi @asociatia_semnecusute for hosting us! Lots of inspiration to take home!

Last weekend our Lab team ran the TC2 digital weaving advanced course with 5 very dedicated participants!

The focus of this course was to learn about structures for 3 weft gradient and colours mixing on a 1 warp system as well as a 2 warp system.

Each stripe is a trial and error and helps to learn how to read the patterns, understand the structure building and what is possible on a TC2 digital weaving loom. We had happy faces at the end and a bunch of new inspiration for our Lab Team, Alissa and Sarah.

A few images from way back in 2016, when I was lucky enough to work on the Icelandic version of the Bayeux Tapestry. I was there for a month-long residency at the Textile Centre @textilmidstod in Blönduós, and my favourite part was going to the tapestry at night, just quietly stitching away on it. I’ve got real FOMO right now about not being able to see the actual Bayeux Tapestry, and since I reference it a lot when I teach workshops, thought I’d share this instead.

Vatnsdæla á Refli is a 46-metre-long tapestry, stitched collaboratively to tell The Saga of the People of Vatnsdalur. It was started in 2011 by Jóhanna E. Pálmadóttir — local handcraft teacher, sheep farmer and wool expert — and finished in 2024, all using traditional sewing and embroidery techniques.
The saga itself is the family history of the people of Hof, set in the 9th to 11th centuries. The story moves between Norway and Vatnsdalur in Iceland and the surrounding area.

It was designed back in 2011 by students from the Iceland University of the Arts, led by Kristín Ragna Gunnarsdóttir.

The wool was spun by Istex, nine colours in two weights, a thinner 1-ply for outlines and locking down stitches, a heavier 2-ply for filling in the figures.

Same techniques as the Bayeux Tapestry too: couching for the fill, stem stitch for the outlines.
it’s no longer at Kvennaskólinn, it’ll be moving to a new home in Blönduós soon.

We're never bored at the Textile Center, but the lab team has been especially busy since the start of the year. So busy, in fact, that they've barely had time to share what they've been up to. So here are a few snapshots in all their chaotic, unfiltered glory to sum it all up!

(Context: Our historic knitting machines are repaired and up and running - so is the Kniterate. Sarah and Alissa attended a TC2 Technical Workshop in Moss, Norway, and the Fabricademy Bootcamp in Ireland in May respectively, and hosted workshops from digital weaving to tufting. They assisted designers, artists-in-residence, and researchers with their projects - there's a "makers in the lab" section on our website. And yes, the Tc2 work room finally got blinds and a new window 🤩) by @textilmidstod

Multi-generational wool experimentation in the TextileLab!

Last week, our lab team, Sarah and Alissa, joined Dr. Sveinn Hallgrímsson, a former Academic Dean at the Agricultural College of Iceland (he initiated the project), and our dear (retired) colleague and wool expert Jóhanna to explore how to give new value to “worthless” wool.

Working with snoð - the short winter fleece - and lærull, the coarser, dirtier wool from the legs, they experimented with different blends, carding, and felting techniques. Each combination produces unique results.

We’re still figuring out where this work might lead, but finding new uses for undervalued Icelandic wool has long been a focus of ours. As Jóhanna put it: “It’s all about the snoð!” 🐑

We had fun hosting the Iceland Field School at the Textile Center for the fourth time in June 2026!

Designed by Dr. Kathleen Vaughan of Concordia University in Montréal, Canada, this interdisciplinary university course brings together students to explore creative practice, textile craft, place-based learning, and community engagement.

The final exhibition and Artist Talk, titled “Tog & Þel” (the two layers of Icelandic sheep wool), took place during "Rabarbarahátíð" – the Rhubarb Festival – on June 27, 2026, at Hillebrandtshús, one of Blönduós’s oldest houses.

Thank you for spending the month with us! We look forward to the next time :)
