The moment I realized that I was standing on sacred ground is the moment I realized that my WHY had reached a new depth. This was no longer about the state of the industry as we know it now. I was made acutely aware that the mantle that was placed on me came from the roots of my existence that started in that very place- Charleston, SC. Looking at the ground beneath my feet knowing that THAT specific space is where my ancestors took their first steps onto US soil is not only humbling and profoundly revelatory, but it created an undeniable connection to my ancestors and clear understanding of my calling. Standing at Gadsden’s Wharf, where so many of the enslaved arrived in chains yet carried undeniable resilience and brilliance in their hearts - I understood that my work with TVR isn’t just about the beauty industry. It’s about honoring the legacy of those who paved the way with their blood, sweat, and unwavering spirit. I often ask myself “why me?” Why was I chosen to carry this message. But standing there, rooted and raised in Charleston, SC, it all became crystal clear. This event was full circle. I am FROM this place. My roots run deep in this very soil where my ancestors first stepped, where they endured, where they planted seeds of hope for generations to come. Every barrier broken, every stylist I’ve educated, every mind that has opened - it all connects back to this sacred soil. My ancestors didn’t survive the unimaginable just for their descendants to accept limitations. They survived so we could transform, rise, and reclaim our crown with dignity and purpose. Receiving the @iaamuseum Culture Award for “Crown” in this place, at this time, during Juneteenth weekend - it’s not coincidence. It’s destiny meeting preparation. It’s ancestors’ prayers being answered through the work we do today. Now I know exactly why me. This is bigger than beauty. This is about liberation. This year we incorporated “huddles” into the Texture VS Race Summit, inspired by the TVR Town Hall, to create safer spaces to bring your questions on various topics to the table without fear of judgement or recourse in the name of self improvement. The goal? To come to an understanding, form an inclusive action plan, and learn how to be a better person than you were yesterday. Because it’s really love. 💚✨🤍🕊️ My dearest Dom, You were never simply a member of my @texturevsrace team. You were my friend, my partner in purpose, and someone who will forever be imprinted on my heart. As I went back through our pictures, videos, and memories, I realized that where my mind could not remember every moment, my body did. It knows the depth of this loss. I feel your absence as a hole in my heart because you were so deeply entrenched in my life. From the first day we met, we both knew we were meant to be connected. We knew we would do great things together—that, hand in hand, we would pull each other into our next, serve each other well, and love each other along the way. And we did. I know you loved me, and you knew how deeply I loved you. I will forever be grateful that God brought you into my life with purpose. Five years may be what the calendar says, but in my heart, it feels like I have known and loved you forever. I know I am not alone in this gratitude. Our team, our extended circle of friends, and the family you built throughout this industry are all grateful for the light you brought into our lives. We will do our best to honor you by carrying your legacy into every room we enter—in our work, in the way we show up for one another, and in the love we continue to give. Texture vs Race remembers Dominique Ly’Var AKA @kingdomofcurls_ ✨🕊️🫶🏾 Dom was more than a part of The Texture vs Race Collaborative—he was a cornerstone of this movement. Dom gave TVR his time, his energy, his loyalty, his extraordinary talent, and his unwavering commitment. He showed up—not only when the lights were on and the room was full, but in the quiet moments of preparation, teamwork, encouragement, and service that made everything possible. When Dom was in the building, we knew everything would be alright. He never let anything fall. Not on his watch. He reverenced TVR like it was his very own- with honor and respect. He believed in what we were building. He carried the mission with pride, helped shape its culture, and represented what it means to lead with artistry, integrity, generosity, and heart. Whether he was teaching, creating, supporting another artist, or simply bringing his unmistakable light into the room, Dom made the work—and all of us—better. Dom was the avatar of Texture vs Race: a master artist and educator who moved fluidly across every fabric, connected deeply with people, and embodied the truth that hair is a fabric, not a race. If we stumble as we find our way through these uncertain times, may we remember to center ourselves in the good that lives within us. Dom led with what was true to his heart. There was never a question about who he was because he lived it—openly, consistently, and without compromise. And perhaps that is the point: not to carry on without him, but to carry him forward—allowing the way he lived, loved, created, and showed up to remain our example. The Viewing from 10 AM–1 PM is a drop-in visitation . Sunday. I just saw you Sunday. 💔 I have never had to make a post that pulled from depths of my heart like this Dom you were a SUPERSTAR!! You were also super talented, super humble, super supportive, super kind, and super loyal. ♥️🫶🏾 You came into my life for purpose. We often spoke about how we both changed each other’s life. Me- I exposed you to another level of community and a clear vision for your career path. 🚀 You- you were the avatar for the Texture vs Race Collaborative. You were not only a wonderful talent, but a great team member. If you were a part of an event, show, or class- I knew it would all be ok. You are the same person who set up the booths, carried and opened boxes, put up backdrops fought with floating TV stands (hated to see them coming) and then hit the stage like a celebrity rock artist bringing all kinds of drama!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Your way of teaching was unmatched. You gave until you were empty but such ease. It was always about rhythm and flow. You touched a lot of people. Everyone will carry a piece of you with them. If you didn’t get to experience Dom, I’m sorry. You missed out on a good one. You were so humble. Those that knew you well, knew you hated the camera and hid as much as possible. Your charismatic approach to style was just like you. Not for show but for pure enjoyment. You never understood why or how you took the air out of a room. I was told it was always TVR featuring Dominique and the Pips. 🤣 You were my friend. 🙏🏽 Outside of TVR, we were close in so many levels. We shared things never to be spoken aloud. You had my back and I had yours. I’m devastated and broken to know I have to walk through a world where you are not in it. 💔 In all things I find gratitude. My God saw fit to bring you into my life where we shared many stages. He allowed us our final curtain call together on stage Sunday night to do LAST what we do BEST- perform together. I’ve always been your friend, supporter, and perpetual hype man! I love you Dom…Forever in my heart.
