South Park (2004)

Animation · Comedy · Season 8, Episode 13 · “Cartman’s Incredible Gift”

After suffering a head injury, Eric Cartman convinces local law enforcement he has psychic powers, landing him in the middle of a gruesome serial killer investigation. Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and South Park at the absolute peak of their Golden Era satirizing prestige crime thrillers.

Critics focused on the absurd Red Dragon parodies and psychic showdowns. They missed the point. This is an unhinged breakdown of authority figures instantly buying into obvious fraud, paired with one of the most painfully funny hostage scenes in television history. The serial killer’s vacation slideshow alone is worth the watch.
Criminally quotable. Criminally underrated.

Unleashed (2005)
Action · Drama · 1h 42m · Louis Leterrier

A man raised since childhood as a human attack dog for a mob boss escapes his captors and tries to build a life he never had. Jet Li, Morgan Freeman, and Bob Hoskins in one of the most underrated action films of the 2000s.

Critics focused on the fight scenes. They missed the point. This is a film about what happens to a person when they’re stripped of everything human — and what it takes to get it back. The score by Massive Attack alone is worth the watch.

Criminally underseen. Criminally underrated.

eAmerican Psycho (2000)
Horror · Satire · 1h 42m · Mary Harron

A Wall Street executive with perfect hair, a perfect apartment, and a perfect business card is also a serial killer. Or is he? That question is the entire point.

Christian Bale gave one of the most committed performances in cinema history as Patrick Bateman — a man so obsessed with status and surface that there’s nothing left underneath. American Psycho is not really about murder. It’s about what happens when a society rewards performance over substance for long enough.

The business card scene alone is worth the watch. You already know the one.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
Fantasy · Adventure · 4h 10m · Peter Jackson

11 Oscars. The highest-rated finale in cinema history. And somehow, after all of that, the scene that destroys everyone is a dying king telling his horse it’s okay to let go.

Peter Jackson didn’t just make a trilogy. He made something that a generation will never fully recover from. The Passing of Théoden alone is proof that cinema can hit harder than anything else.

And yes, you will cry. Again.

After Life (2019–2022)
Comedy · Drama · 3 seasons · Netflix · Ricky Gervais

A man loses his wife to cancer and decides the only logical response is to say exactly what he thinks to everyone around him, consequences be damned. What starts as a coping mechanism slowly reveals itself to be something much more human.

Ricky Gervais wrote, directed, and starred in what might be his best work. It’s funny and devastating in equal measure — sometimes in the same scene. The dog alone will break you.

Not an easy watch. Completely worth it.

Along Came Polly (2004)
Comedy · Romance · 1h 30m · Ben Stiller & Jennifer Aniston

A risk analyst gets cheated on during his honeymoon. His solution? Fall for the most chaotic, unpredictable woman he’s ever met. Classic Ben Stiller — anxious, neurotic, and completely out of his depth.

Philip Seymour Hoffman steals every scene he’s in. The basketball scene alone is worth the watch. Critics hated it. Audiences loved it. And honestly, that Rotten Tomatoes score of 27% says more about critics than it does about the film.

A certified early 2000s comfort movie.

Breaking Bad (2008–2013)
Crime drama · 5 seasons · AMC

A high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with terminal cancer starts cooking meth to secure his family’s financial future. What begins as desperation ends as one of the greatest character studies ever put on screen.

Breaking Bad is widely considered one of the greatest television series ever made. Every season is tighter, darker, and more gripping than the last. If you haven’t seen it yet, clear your schedule. If you have — you already know.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
Fantasy · Adventure · 2h 59m · Peter Jackson

The Fellowship is broken. Frodo and Sam are lost in the wilderness with only a creature named Gollum to guide them. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli are fighting a war they can’t win. And somewhere in the middle of all of it, a battle is about to happen that cinema has never topped.

Helm’s Deep. Three thousand men against ten thousand. No hope. No plan. Just hold the wall.

The hardest film to make in a trilogy is always the middle one. Peter Jackson made it look easy.

The Sopranos (1999–2007)
Crime · Drama · 6 seasons · HBO

A New Jersey mob boss starts having panic attacks and goes to therapy. That’s the premise. What follows is eight years of the most complex, brutal, and human television ever made.

Tony Soprano is not a hero. He’s not meant to be. And yet you can’t stop watching. David Chase created something that permanently changed what television could be — every prestige drama since owes this show a debt.

The finale still divides people. That’s the point.

Tropic Thunder (2008)
Comedy · Action · 1h 47m · Ben Stiller

A group of pampered Hollywood actors making a war movie get dropped into an actual jungle with actual drug lords and absolutely no survival skills. What could go wrong?

Ben Stiller wrote, directed, and starred in one of the most unhinged comedies ever made. Robert Downey Jr. got an Oscar nomination for it. Tom Cruise has a cameo that might be the best thing he’s ever done. And somehow it all works.

A movie that would never get made today. Which is exactly why it’s a classic.

Signs (2002)
Sci-Fi · Horror · 1h 46m · M. Night Shyamalan

A former priest discovers crop circles on his farm. Then things get worse. A lot worse. Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix barricading themselves inside a farmhouse with two kids and absolutely no plan is somehow one of the most tense viewing experiences of the 2000s.

Shyamalan at his best — building dread out of almost nothing. No jump scares, no CGI overload. Just a family sitting at a dinner table trying to pretend the world isn’t ending.

That dinner scene hits different every time.

Scary Movie 2 (2001)
Comedy · Horror · 1h 27m · Wayans Brothers

Four college students get tricked into spending the night in a haunted house by their professor. What follows is 87 minutes of jokes that absolutely should not have worked, delivered by people who clearly had no shame and even less of a budget.

Critics hated it. The audience didn’t care. And honestly — the hand scene alone earned it a place in pop culture history.

Is it good? No. Is it funny? Somehow, yes.

The new Scary Movie just dropped — but this is the one that started the chaos.
