The Halloween Marathon continues as I watch a revenge movie with a blaxploitation style from the ‘70s, Sugar Hill. The movie is a supernatural revenge story driven by voodoo, zombies, and righteous payback. Diana "Sugar" Hill (Marki Bey) is a photographer whose boyfriend, nightclub owner Langston, is murdered by mob boss Morgan after refusing to sell his club. Devastated and enraged, Sugar turns to Mama Maitresse, a former voodoo queen, for help. Mama summons Baron Samedi, the loa of death, who agrees to assist Sugar in exchange for her soul. He raises an army of zombies, preserved bodies of enslaved Africans, to carry out Sugar’s vengeance. Marki Bey’s performance in this movie is the heart of the film. She brings sadness, strength, and charisma to Sugar, turning a revenge story into something empowering. The supernatural style adds a layer of cool, scary charm that makes the movie stand out from other horror and blaxploitation movies out there. Happy to see Richard Lawson in this movie as Lt. Valentine, but I didn’t care for this character. He was doing the investigation throughout the movie, but he was somewhat useless and such a waste. This movie did something out of the box that I liked, and it takes a while to get into the movie, but this movie is definitely a watch for the Halloween season and anytime. by @tg54_55

The Halloween Marathon continues as I watch something interesting, a movie produced and directed by Robert Zemeckis in the early ‘90s. Death Becomes Her. It’s about vanity, rivalry, and the horrifying consequences of eternal life. At its core, it follows two women, Madeline Ashton (Meryl Streep) and Helen (Goldie Hawn), who were locked in a decades‑long feud over Ernest Menville (Bruce Willis), a respected plastic surgeon, the kind of guy who could sculpt faces and make people look younger. Helen is in love with him until Madeline steals Ernest. And that spirals into supernatural absurdity once they both drink a potion granting immortality. It’s a satire that blends Hollywood vanity, supernatural fantasy, and comedy into one of the early ’90s’ most memorable cult films. The special effects were a little odd to watch nowadays, but at the time, they were groundbreaking visual effects that created a tone that’s both cartoonish and well done. Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn absolutely devour this movie. Their bickering between those two over a fat, pathetic, spineless Republican surgeon was hilarious. Also, Bruce Willis was great playing a different role, as this pathetic person shows his good range as an actor. I enjoyed this movie. If anyone wants something to laugh at in the Halloween season, then this is it. by @tg54_55

The Halloween Marathon continues as I rewatched a very old movie from the ‘50s that’s a Horror/Sci-Fi movie named Creatures from the Black Lagoon. The movie is about a team of scientists exploring the Amazon discovers a fossilized webbed hand, leading them into a remote lagoon where they encounter a living amphibious humanoid, the Gill‑man. It becomes both territorial and fascinated by one of the researchers, triggering a deadly struggle for survival. The camera shots when the characters go underwater were impressive. The camera moves with a slow patience, building tension through silence rather than speed because if they speed it up, it would be all over the place. The design of the Gill-Man might be laughed at because of how it looks today, but for the time when it came out, it looks good. It looked alive and creepy, rather than cheap or rubbery. The movie does feel slow because of its pacing, and the human characters go on about in the same old scenes of them debating what to do next. It’s like you want to tell them to “GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE!” “THERE’S A DAMN FISH MONSTER TRYING TO KILL YOU!” Why are they going on about this in a calm way? It’s just weird. I like the movie. The pacing is slow at points, but if you can deal with that, you’ll enjoy it. by @tg54_55

The Halloween Marathon continues as I watch Never Let Go, a movie about holding on to a rope, starring Halle Berry. The movie is a survival‑horror film starring Halle Berry as Momma, a mother fighting to protect her twin sons, Nolan and Samuel, and a dog named Koda in total isolation. She insists that a malevolent supernatural entity called “The Evil” has destroyed the world and will possess anyone it touches. To stay safe, the family must remain tethered to their cabin by ropes whenever they go outside, perform daily rituals, and thank the house for its protection. Seeing Halle Berry without the makeup and the glam in this survival setting was great. It’s always nice to see actors or actresses trying something different, like what Halle did in this movie with her character trying to help her kids with food and other stuff in this movie. The kid actors who played Nolan (Percy Daggs IV) and Sam (Anthony B. Jenkins) did alright. They were kinda off at points with their acting, but it wasn’t that awful, so it’s fine. There were a couple of things I didn’t like. The dog conflict was heartbreaking to watch. While I understand the setting of the movie, it still hurts to see that very sad scene in the movie about Koda. The final act of the movie was very confusing about which is what, which is real, and it’s going to make a lot of people’s heads explode because of the odd storytelling in this final act. The movie was okay. I like Halle’s performance in the movie, but there are a lot of things in the story that hold this movie back from becoming something greater. by @tg54_55

The Halloween Marathon continues as I watch people doing that hand stuff to get stoned from a hand prop and see dead people called Talk to Me. The movie is a supernatural horror film from A24 about grief, possession, and the terrifying consequences of crossing into the spirit world. The core plot centers on a group of Australian teenagers who discover a ritual involving a severed, embalmed hand that allows them to communicate with and be possessed by spirits. A viral party game sweeps through local teens. If you grip a mysterious, embalmed hand, say "Talk to me," then "I let you in," and a spirit will possess you. The possession must be stopped within 90 seconds, or the spirit may bind itself permanently. Mia (Sophie Wilde), a grieving 17‑year‑old still reeling from her mother’s death, becomes fascinated with the ritual. When she tries it, she believes she makes contact with her mother’s spirit something that pulls her deeper into the game, and ohhhhhhh, man, it's fucking crazy. First of all, credit goes to Sophie Wilde for her role in the movie. Sophie made her performance a mix of fragility and recklessness that makes every decision believable, even though I don’t like the character of Mia. The actor was great. This movie’s story is an interesting roller coaster ride that pulls you through grief, fear, and desperation with a realism that hits harder than most horror films. It blends grounded realism with brutal supernatural chaos in a way only A24 can pull off. There were some gross parts and scenes in the movie that I was disgusted by, but besides that, the movie is a great watch for the Halloween season. by @tg54_55

The Halloween Marathon continues as I watch Jason take a little boat trip while detouring to The Big Apple in Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan. Jason is revived (wow, what a shock) when a boat’s anchor severs an underwater power cable, sending an electrical surge through his submerged body. He kills the couple aboard the small boat, takes a new hockey mask, and secretly boards the SS Lazarus, a cruise ship carrying Lakeview High’s senior class on a celebratory trip to Manhattan. Once aboard, Jason begins stalking and murdering students and crew members one by one. One of the passengers is Rennie, a student haunted by traumatic childhood visions of Jason, and her boyfriend Sean. Rennie’s strict uncle, Principal McCulloch, and teacher Colleen also accompany the class. I’m going to be honest, I wasn’t into Rennie and Sean in this movie. I just think that they're boring, like the rest of the people on this ship are also boring. I was just watching this movie to see Jason in New York and see him doing some kills during this long boat ride. The rest of the students weren’t anything interesting. They felt cookie-cutter, and I was thrilled that Jason took them out one by one. Speaking of Jason, his unmasked face looked awful. It wasn’t as great as The New Blood, when his face looked well done compared to how bad he looked. In this one, it looked like his face was made of rubber. The kills from Jason and the cinematography were the best parts of the movie. The rest of the movie, like the story, wasn’t great. If you want to skip this one, that’s fine. You aren’t missing anything from this movie. by @tg54_55

The Halloween Marathon continues as I watch once again, going back to some more of Jason in Friday The 13th Part 6: The New Blood. It centers on Tina Shepard, a troubled teenage girl with telekinetic powers who accidentally resurrects Jason Voorhees from the bottom of Crystal Lake, unleashing a new wave of killings. Tina Shepard has spent years haunted by guilt after accidentally killing her father with her uncontrolled psychic abilities during a childhood incident at Crystal Lake. As a teenager, she returns to the lake with her mother and her manipulative psychiatrist, Dr. Crews, who secretly intends to exploit her powers rather than heal her. The movie attempts to refresh the long‑running slasher movie series by introducing a main female character who is a telekinetic heroine whose trauma becomes the emotional core to the story. After accidentally unleashing Jason from his watery grave from the previous movie, Tina is forced to confront both her past and an unstoppable killer. The film blends supernatural elements with the classic franchise brutality, culminating in one of the series’ most memorable showdowns. While the supporting cast falls into familiar archetypes. The two parts in the story with Jason, of course, and her past were handled well. The makeup effects on Jason for this movie were amazing. They built a full-body prosthetic suit for Kane Hodder, incorporating exposed vertebrae, rib structures, and torn musculature to reflect Jason’s long history of injuries. The mask was intentionally cracked to reveal part of his face, and the water damage textures were layered to suggest years of submersion. I loved it. As for the movie? I loved it as well. It was a nice watch for the Halloween season. by @tg54_55

The Halloween Marathon continues as I watch a well-known slasher movie with a big guy in a hockey mask, Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives. Tommy Jarvis, still traumatized from killing Jason years earlier, escapes a mental institution with his friend Hawes and heads to Jason’s grave to cremate the body, hoping to end his nightmares for good. During a thunderstorm, Tommy impulsively stabs Jason’s corpse with a metal fence post (which was very stupid of Tommy). Lightning strikes the post, reanimating Jason as an undead, superhuman killer. Jason immediately murders Hawes and begins his trail back to Crystal Lake. Where to begin? As I said, Tommy was very stupid for stabbing Jason with a metal fence, but the lightning strike to the post to bring Jason back from the dead was amazing to see, so if they had to bring back Jason in an impactful way, then good job. For a movie like this, the kills have to be good. The kills in this movie were fast and often humorous. For me, the kills were alright. It felt like it could've been better, but that folded backwards, spine snapped on the sheriff is my favorite. There was humor in the movie, and some were funny, and I understand why it was needed to calm the tensions down at points, but it can be silly at times. This movie is an interesting watch because of seeing Jason undead, and it’s not a waste of time to watch. It’s passable enough. by @tg54_55

The Halloween Marathon continues as I watch a horror/thriller that came out around last year, and I watched this on Tubi (this movie isn’t a Tubi Original) called
The Plantation. It centers on interracial couples who venture deep into the Louisiana swamps for a backpacking getaway, only to stumble upon an abandoned plantation where supernatural forces tied to the region’s violent past begin dragging history into the present. Yeah, this movie was something else. The first half was boring. It felt copy-and-paste throughout the movie until the third cabin, when the movie picked up, and oh boy, it was insane. The acting was very cheesy, and at times hilarious to watch because of how crazy it was, and I don’t care for any of these characters in this movie besides being crazy at that place because of how boring they were. It’s one of those movies that is so bad that it’s so good to laugh at, and if you want a good laugh, then this is it. by @tg54_55

The Halloween Marathon continues as I return to a movie I did last year, but I did the second movie first because of Pam Grier, and now I’m back to do the first movie, called Blacula. The movie is about an 18th‑century African prince’s plea for justice, which becomes a centuries‑long curse that awakens in ‘70s modern Los Angeles. Prince Mamuwalde travels to Transylvania in 1780 seeking Count Dracula’s help to end the slave trade. Dracula refuses, mocks Mamuwalde, and makes advances toward his wife Luva. After a violent confrontation, Dracula bites Mamuwalde, transforms him into a vampire, curses him with the name “Blacula,” and seals him in a coffin. Luva is left trapped and dies in the chamber. Thalmus Rasulala, who played Dr. Gordon Thomas, did a grounded, credible performance as Dr. Gordon Thomas, playing the role with a blend of intelligence, moral conviction, and steady intensity. His presence anchors the film’s investigation subplot. The factory fight scene with the multiple vampires was fun to watch, especially with the heroes of the fight throwing the torches at the vampires and setting them on fire. Credit goes to the stunt people who did the fire stuff, and credit also goes to the camera people who had to shoot the scenes while they’re on fire. What else can I say about William Marshall? Other than a great actor for his amazing performance, I enjoy watching the movie. I liked the second one more, but it doesn’t take away the enjoyment of the movie. by @tg54_55

The Halloween Marathon continues as I checked out a movie based on a short story by Stephen King called Graveyard Shift. The plot centers on a rundown textile mill, a cruel foreman, and something beastly lurking beneath the building. Widowed drifter John Hall (David Andrews) arrives in a small Maine town in search of work. He’s hired for the graveyard shift at an old textile mill that’s overrun with rats and sits beside an abandoned graveyard. The mill’s foreman, Warwick (Stephen Macht), is abusive, corrupt, and secretly having affairs with female workers. He’s also ignoring serious safety violations that could shut the mill down. And yes, Brad Dourif is in this film as Tucker Cleveland, the exterminator, and I wish that they would’ve made a horror movie based on Brad’s character. The atmosphere and the creepy/filthy setting of the mill are among the highlights of the movie, as you see the rats, the wetness, the humidity, and the grime inside this rundown mill. The performance by Stephen Macht as Warwick was good, he delivers a harsh, intimidating performance, portraying him as a tyrannical foreman whose cruelty drives the mill’s toxic atmosphere. The pacing in the first half was slow, but it does pick up when we get to the mill work and how creepy that beast is. I don’t believe that it’s one of the best Stephen King movies, but for the Halloween season it’s an okay watch. by @tg54_55

The Halloween marathon continues on as I talk about a movie that came out this year about twins
Twin. Called Is God Is. The movie is a revenge thriller about twin sisters Racine and Anaia, who were burned and disfigured (one was, the other one is alright) as infants by their father, and who are sent on a violent, cross‑country mission by their dying mother called God (Vivica A. Fox) to kill the man who destroyed their family. The main twins, Kara Young (Racine) and Mallori Johnson (Anaia), were great to watch because of the chemistry they have in the movie. Their performance shows a remarkable connection and sisterhood through their care for each other. The music in the movie does a good job of setting the tone by conveying the violence, the anxiety, and the dread of the movie while watching. While the story was understandable, I wasn’t a fan of the final act with the father. It’s sort of a spoiler, so you have been warned. After so much build-up and anticipation of the evil Dad, the reveal of him fell flat. It never matched the intensity of the journey towards the final boss throughout the movie, he just looked like he came from a BET sitcom. Nothing against the actor who played the Dad, but it should’ve been something better. The movie is good because of the twin chemistry that I really liked, but the story should’ve been better. by @tg54_55
