Bringing competitive freediving to Nicaragua has been a vision long in the making for Thomas Dédès, Colleen Yaw, and the team at Freediving Nicaragua. In a country where freediving is still emerging, they see the potential to create not just a local sport but a platform for athletes to test their limits, set records, and represent Nicaragua on the global stage.

Freediving competitions are unique: records often fall quickly, with each diver pushing just a bit deeper than the last. But here, even a single dive can be life-changing for local athletes. For many, this opportunity opens doors to more competitions around Central America, sparking dreams of going farther and deeper. The recent August 2024 competition was a landmark event, drawing top-tier divers from abroad and positioning Nicaragua as a serious freediving destination, all run, managed and conceptualized by Thomas and his team.

Thomas, co-founder of Freediving Nicaragua, has been working tirelessly to make this vision a reality. As a dedicated teacher and experienced freediver, his goal is to provide access to the sport for those who might not otherwise have the chance. For him and the entire team, it’s about building skills, self-confidence, and a sense of pride—both in the sport and in representing Nicaragua.

Freediving demands not only physical endurance but also mental resilience and respect for the depths. It’s a sport for those willing to put in the work, and Freediving Nicaragua is setting the stage for future athletes to go deep, achieve personal milestones, and showcase the country’s potential. With each competition, Nicaragua moves closer to becoming a key player in the world of freediving.
