A year ago, I got the phone call no pet parent ever wants to hear. The vet told me Lola probably had 9 to 12 months to live.

We decided to start chemotherapy, but honestly, I had no idea if I was making the right decision. There wasn’t much information about her specific situation, and I just kept hoping I was doing what was best for her.

Looking back now, I wouldn’t change a thing.

This past year has been full of walks, road trips, cuddles, games of fetch, and so many little moments that I don’t think I would have appreciated the same way before.

Lola has taught me to slow down, live in the moment, and never take time with the ones you love for granted.

The day I started writing this, she was spending the night at the hospital because of a complication from her cancer. I knew she was okay, but I couldn’t wait to bring my sweet girl home. The house feels so empty without her.

We had to stop the chemo.

One week later, she had to be hospitalized again for 3 more days, and little by little, a piece of my heart is being taken from me.

She came back home on Monday and we went back to our routine, our daily trips to the vet now, our walks at the park, our little moments together. Enjoying every little second I have with my Lolotinha.

I pray that she feels comfort and joy every single day, and that she knows how much she is loved.

Some places just make you feel at home.

That’s what this World Cup did for me.

No matter where I am in the world, World Cup season always brings out my Brazilian side.

I answered so many questions with the same simple response: “Well, I’m Brazilian.” Whether someone was asking if I knew what offside was, if I followed soccer, or who I was cheering for… because it’s part of who we are. We grew up with it.

In Brazil, soccer isn’t just a sport. It’s our culture, our memories, our identity.
