🇿🇦💜 FROM THE HEART OF A SOUTH AFRICAN WOMAN

There is a pain that is difficult to put into words when you are a woman from South Africa.

A pain that comes from knowing that somewhere, right now, a woman is afraid to walk home.
A daughter is not coming home.
A mother is waiting for a phone call that may never come.
A sister is hiding behind a smile.
A friend is suffering in silence.

And the hardest part is knowing that these are not just stories.

They are our mothers.
Our sisters.
Our daughters.
Our friends.
Our colleagues.
They are us.

I am a South African woman, and I refuse to accept that fear should be part of our everyday lives.

I refuse to accept that “be careful” should be the price of being a woman.
That we should constantly watch over our shoulders.
That we should have to explain what we were wearing, where we were, who we were with, or why we trusted someone.

We are not asking for too much.

We are asking to live.
To walk freely.
To love without fear.
To say no without consequences.
To leave without being punished.
To come home.

And to every woman who has survived something she never deserved, I see you.

To every woman who is still fighting, you are not alone.

To every family who has lost a daughter, sister, mother or friend, your grief matters. Her life mattered.

And to every person who thinks GBV is someone else’s problem:

It is time to speak.
It is time to listen.
It is time to intervene.
It is time to stop making excuses.

Because silence has cost us too much.

🇿🇦 South African women deserve more than survival. We deserve safety. We deserve dignity. We deserve a life free from violence.

So today, from wherever I may be in the world, my heart is with the women of home.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Not tomorrow.
Not when it happens to someone we know.
