@thandaisland isn’t merely a place to retreat to for some solitude, though there is plenty of that. Your daily itinerary can be as full or as pared back as you desire, and with an activities menu that could wrap around the island twice, you’re unlikely to hear “I’m bored” from the kids — including the grown-up ones.

The chartered helicopter ride on arrival provides a bird’s-eye view of just how much there is to explore when an entire island is yours. From the moment you arrive, you can move between the water and dry land almost entirely on a whim: diving or snorkelling in the surrounding marine reserve, sailing, fishing, watersports, tennis, beach cinemas or finding somewhere scenic to do very little at all.

The best part is, no small talk with other tourists, no queuing for the sailboat and meals on your schedule.

A private island is just a bit bigger than a suite - 20 acres in this case. But its size is only one reason why @thandaisland has been selected as our Suite of the Month.

Thirty kilometres off Tanzania’s coast, Thanda Private Island is booked exclusively for your group. The five-suite beachfront villa forms the main residence, with two 'bandas' (traditional thatched cottages upgraded with luxurious modern interiors) providing additional accommodation in a separate part of the the island.

Thanda is located within the protected Shungimbili Island Marine Reserve, giving guests unusual and exclusive access to the reefs and waters surrounding the island.

Snorkel the house reef, sail aboard a traditional dhow, visit neighbouring islands or, between October and March, head south in search of the whale sharks that feed nearby.
