There is a version of Tanzania you can google. This is not it.

My Blue Star Retreat is eight guests, once a cycle. We watch the Serengeti turn gold from the deck. We ride in proper safari style (thank you @kuonitravel for sponsoring the journey that started it all). We drink champagne under acacia trees with Maasai hosts. We cook ugali over open fire with the women of the village. We end on the sands of Jambiani and in the alleyways of Stone Town.

I built this retreat because clothes were never the whole story. The kanga comes from somewhere — and I wanted to take you there. Not as a tourist. As a guest.

Our first retreat sold out. The next one will too.

I keep a folder on my phone called “pinch me.” This is some of it.

The V&A commissioned two exclusive Tandi designs for the Africa Fashion exhibition. Both sold out. King Charles visited the makers market where Tandi stood — after we won the Mayor of London’s “London Made Me” award. The Sunday Times published my writing on the fabric of Tanzania, in print. Kuoni Travel Magazine made my journey their cover feature. Hello!, Stylist and the Daily Mail have covered the brand. Thandiwe Newton wears Tandi. A BBC presenter wore Tandi live at the UN Climate Conference. Kuoni sponsored my fabric-sourcing journey across Tanzania. And our first cultural retreat sold out.

I’m sharing this in one place for a reason: Tandi is growing, and I’m choosing the people who grow with it.

Menswear is next. Retreats are expanding. If you’re a hotel, a travel brand, a retailer or an investor who believes culture is the future of luxury — my inbox is open.

These are the market girls of Dar es Salaam — the women who helped me source the kanga fabrics that became Tandi.

On my last trip I brought Tandi pieces back to them and dressed them in the designs their own fabric had become. I wanted to know if they liked what I’d made. (Swipe — I think you can see the answer.)

My mother grew up in East Africa and carried the kanga with her to London, wearing it her own way. I grew up watching her and learning that cloth can hold language, memory and identity. Every kanga carries a Swahili proverb — and every Tandi garment keeps that proverb visible, with the translation on the tag.

There have been chapters of this journey that broke me. Tanzania is where I put myself back together — and poured everything I had back into this brand.

Fabric made in Tanzania. Garments crafted in London. Every piece limited edition — once it sells out, it is never reproduced.

This is Tandi. Culture you can wear.

Having a dream for your business is one thing. Knowing what to do tomorrow to move it forward is another.

Last night, I mapped out the next 30 days on Post-it notes: daily business tasks, but also time to exercise and learn French. When you run your own business, it’s easy for those things to slip.

Day one: samples dropped off in East London, reformer Pilates at my sister’s studio, and an hour of French.

I’m testing a clearer roadmap, one day at a time. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, try planning one business task, one way to move and one thing to learn for tomorrow.

Day one done. Twenty-nine to go.

What’s one thing you can do tomorrow to move your dream forward? by @thandi.tandi

No queue at Cédric. Champagne shopping at 1:12am.

I went to Paris for fashion meetings. I made time for Paris, too.

It was raining when I visited Cédric, and there was no queue. Later, I found myself in Publicisdrugstore hunting for more champagne at 1:12am. It’s open until 2am, and honestly, it’s worth a browse.

In between, there were daily lunch menus, art on the streets, my first motorbike taxi and catching up with friends on a terrace.

You don’t need to avoid the famous places. Just don’t let someone else’s list decide your entire trip.

Save these ideas for your next Paris visit. What’s something you discovered there without planning it? by @thandi.tandi

I went to Paris for meetings. I made time for Paris too.

Paris at the end of Fashion Week. Meetings, champagne, good company… and that balcony view at night. I could get used to this. taken in Paris, France by @thandi.tandi

Have you ever traveled through Paris on the back of a motorcycle?

Paris looked beautiful from the back of a motorbike, but most of my time was spent working on Tandi Fashion: meeting agents, talking inventory and exploring connections with US retailers. Then champagne and dinner with friends to end the day. Not a bad work trip. taken in Paris, France by @thandi.tandi

Would you take a motorbike through Paris at rush hour suitcase and all? 🏍️

I got one of my 5Ks done in London, hopped on the Eurostar, and arrived in Paris right in the middle of rush hour. I’d never tried a motorbike ride to my hotel before, but the driver strapped on my little suitcase and off we went. It was comfortable, there was music, and I got to see Paris along the way. Would you try it?

My family tree is complicated. The love isn't. Today my brother Robert got married, and our family came together in all its different forms, half-siblings, step-siblings, different parents, new relatives and different histories. It doesn't fit neatly into one simple explanation.

But perhaps family isn't measured by how easily you can explain it. Perhaps it's measured by who shows up, makes space for you and celebrates with you.

My full name is Thandiwae, which means love. Today, that felt like the theme of the whole day. For anyone whose family doesn't look traditional: complicated doesn't mean less loving.
