Abafazi Bayalila.

I know this fear personally - I am a survivor...

I mention this not to centre my own story, but because sometimes there are wounds that make you feel the fear in a way words cannot fully explain.

And, as we watch what is happening in Kempton Park, I can’t help but think of how many women are carrying that same fear... some silently, some loudly, some from experiences they have survived, and some simply because they know how vulnerable it feels to be a woman in this country.

We are tired.
We are afraid.
We are praying.
We are pleading.

We don’t want to live looking over our shoulders.
We don’t want to calculate every route, every car, every stranger, every man who walks towards us.

We just want to live.

And to the men who are still capable of hearing us:

Please.

Don’t look at me and immediately see your next target.
Don’t look at me and see a body you can overpower.
Don’t look at my vulnerability as an opportunity.

I don’t want to look at every man and wonder if I should run.
I want to believe that when I see you, I am safe.

And, To the women who are afraid tonight... I see you.

To the families waiting for answers... we see you.

To every woman who has changed her route, shared her location, called someone while walking, bought a taser and pepper spray, pretended to be on the phone, or scanned every man around her before she felt safe... we see you.

And to those who are responsible:

May you be found.
May justice find you.
And may no other family have to experience this kind of loss.

Lord, please protect us.

We are praying.
We are pleading.
For protection.
For justice.
For accountability.
For change.

We should not have to beg for the right to simply come home to our 8 year-olds waiting for us.💔
