This is 40.

Bro they really let me be 40. Last year I said goodbye to my brother for my birthday. This year I’m in Japan. It was a heavy year, heavier than I realized, but I have to acknowledge the good in life. Otherwise the deejness disappears.

First, long live Pop Chiefa. Second, shout out to my heart, @rachelwolfepack, for holding me down this last year. Your love and tenderness means more than you know. Shout out my family and community that is there, even when I retreat. Y’all show up and make me feel like I have somewhere I belong.

And shout out to me for showing up through it all. Showing up this year looked like:

Thanking the most high, Miami for Art Basel, Mono Hot Springs, Yuba River, beach days, being creative, backing out Michael Jackson as best man at @ericmathurinmfg and @byjustcyn wedding, seeing family, skiing, Dominican Republic, back to partying, San Diego family trip, one night in Manhattan, making big progress on the novel, Morocco, and so much more.

Quick weekend in the Caribbean to celebrate @ericmathurinmfg as he makes his way down the aisle in a few weeks. Thanks for giving us a reason to celebrate you and this next chapter.

It’s dope when you’re able to keep relationships with friends from different eras of life and have them show up when it’s time. Men need more fellowship in this life.

Anyway, it’s probably the closest I’ll get to Haiti for a while but it was good to swim in the waters my the Mother Island. Also balling out on villas every now and again ain’t so bad. taken in Punta Cana, República Dominicana by @thanksdeej

“Deej,

My brother, my right hand—thank you for standing beside me in ways no one else could. You’ve been my steady ground, my protector, and my friend through every season. You never had to say much; I always knew you were there. Keep being that pillar, Deej. For the family. For my kids. They’re going to need the kind of quiet strength you carry so naturally. I trust you more than words can say, and I know you’ll have their backs like you always had mine.”

Those are my brother’s last words for me. While today is my birthday, yesterday I laid my brother Ernst “Popoute” Letemps Jr. to rest. I’m still feeling the feelings that come with grief and don’t have much for a “eulogy” yet so what I’ll say is that one of my favorite things in world to do was make my brother laugh. This picture — that I’ll use as my obligatory IG bday pic in his honor as I try to climb back out and be social again — is my favorite of us and really exemplifies our relationship.

As I enter the last year of my third decade (nigga, I’m almost 40) I hope to honor his final words for my family, his family, and the chosen family who’ve showed me love throughout my life. I love you all.

Thanks again, Ouray… birthplace of Durango aka Dee’jango. Had the pleasure of working with ALL IN Ice Fest this year and take part in another great year of ice climbing and community. It’s always good when passion and profession align, better when with friends, and best when friendships grow because of it all. Shout out to @eliz_sahagun, @negusinnature, Ken, @ourayicepark, all the Commodores 🦅, and the new people I got to connect with.

Kenya Dump: We installed solar electricity system and computers donated on behalf of @givepowerfoundation and mural courtesy of @thebampart. On our final night we had the lighting ceremony and fed the village to see who this project would be affecting. Honored to be a part of the whirlwind of a trek that directly impacts hundreds of lives.

There’s so much more to this experience but I’ll save it for the artist talk happening on November 13 at 4:30pm at @square HQ at 1955 Broadway. Come hear about it there along with the video premiere and art exhibition unveiling—a collaboration between artists and the Kenyan students of Makutano Primary School.

Took a trip to Yosemite this last weekend for Facelift Yosemite and led my first multi-pitch climb, hung out with the homies and got in some general frolicking. For those that don’t know what a multi pitch is, it means I climbed the mountain first and set up a system so that my climbing partners can safely climb up behind me to a certain point. We the. We do that multiple times until we reach the peak. I’ve only been climbing for a little over a year and I’m kinda shocked by how much I’m already doing with it. Grateful to have a working body at my big age.

Big thank you to @climbing4change x @kailightner for awarding me a grant that enabled me to purchase the gear necessary for this experience. Big shout out to @negusinnature x @blackrock_collective for being the reason there were “tree colored people” in attendance.
