Whatever happens to you has been waiting to happen since the beginning of time.

At a young age, being Asian American was my capacity to assimilate into white culture and falling line with the "model minority." From losing my Asian accent to the food that I eat, these were my goals to optimize the opportunities in my career and social status. Not until recent years that my two worlds pulled me in different directions. I can see more of my parent's belief of what "happiness" is than what it really means to me. It is understandable since a lot of AAPI immigrants fled from war-torn countries and sacrificed everything to obtain this American dream for their children. As offsprings of this pain, many AAPI my age have these profound obligations to not disappoint our parents. It made us work harder to live up to these expectations and abandon our sense of self. To want our own happiness was selfish and disrespectful to our parent's suffering. The script changed when my depression hospitalized me. The burden I carry was not just of my own creation, but the burden of my family's future comes before my own. The weight of this responsibility became unbearable until the epiphany that I can't serve until I serve myself. I found solace in the testimonies of many AAPI voices and was empowered by the AAPI community. Their stories gave me permission to want for more than what the world offered. This turned into pride for my black thin hair, slanted eyes, fish sauce recipes, and my native tongue. Celebrating my roots and uniqueness transformed my purpose from surviving into thriving. This is the universe's true intention for my existence.

"The healthy man does not torture others- generally it is the tortured who turn into torturers." -Carl Jung

AAPI people have an extended stereotype that we are "perpetual foreigners", the idea that AAPI is inherently "other" and not truly American. According to the Bering Land Bridge Theory, Asians first migrated to North America over 15,000 years ago. Filipinos immigrated to North America in the 16th century and establish a settlement in Louisiana in 1763 to escape enslavement during the Spanish galleon trade. Asian immigrants provided labor for the California Gold Rush and the transcontinental railroad in the 1850s. Japanese and Koreans immigrated to the U.S. by 1885 to replace Chinese labor in railroad construction, farming, and fishing. Refugees from Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos fled war, violence, and hardship to the U.S. in the mid-1970s. Asian Americans have a long history and contributions to the American culture, society, science, literature, art, politics, and law. So are we really foreigners to this land?
