Author of THREE TENSES, AN ORAL HISTORY OF ATLANTIS, SAME BED DIFFERENT DREAMS, & PERSONAL DAYS
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Join @tharealedpark on tour for his new memoir THREE TENSES: A Transmission from the Nineties (on sale 8/11).

Before he’d go on to write the Pulitzer-Prize finalist SAME BED DIFFERENT DREAMS, Ed Park wrote a memoir in 1998 and saved it to the vanishing technology of the floppy disk, losing it for more than twenty years. Until one day, emptying out an old, unmarked box in his family’s cramped New York City home, he came across a hefty manila folder. Out slid the only remaining copy of THREE TENSES.

THREE TENSES is an assemblage of beguiling anecdotes, sly observations, and collected esoterica, produced within the creative confines of Park's twenties. From the prose of the young, struggling writer arises the voice of the artist he would become—coalescing to offer a singular picture of creativity in action.

We’re thrilled to reveal the cover for Ed Park’s THREE TENSES—a profound, witty mosaic of autobiographical fragments forming a portrait of a budding creative life.

In 1998, Ed Park wrote a memoir and saved it to the vanishing technology of the floppy disk, losing it for more than twenty years. Until one day, emptying out an old, unmarked box in his family’s cramped New York City home, he came across a hefty manila folder. Out slid the only remaining copy of Three Tenses.

The piece of writing that Park found was an assemblage of beguiling anecdotes, sly observations, and collected esoterica, produced within the confines of the shoebox apartment of his twenties and only now allowed to see the light of day.

Two Ed Parks emerge on the page: within the prose of the young, struggling writer arises the voice of the artist he would become.

⭐️ “Insights that coalesce to illuminate his endlessly curious, mordantly funny worldview. It adds up to an engrossing and beguiling trip through the consciousness of a budding wordsmith.” — Publishers Weekly in a starred review.

IN is the word at the center of this week’s prompt, from the wonderful novelist Ed Park (@tharealedpark). A tiny word, barely a word at all, but how much it can contain.

To be IN something is different from looking back on it. There is no vantage point yet, no tidy arc or lesson to extract. You don’t know what kind of story you’re in because you haven’t reached the other side of it. Maybe that’s why Ed’s prompt feels like such a relief. It doesn’t ask us to make meaning. It only asks us to notice where we are.

Read Ed’s full essay and prompt at the Link in Bio.

Prompt 398. This Is How Memory Works by Ed Park

Write down the word “In,” and see where it takes you—a memory from childhood, an observation at the office, a quote from a book or newspaper, a city where you once lived. Don’t write more than a sentence or two.

Now write the word “In” again and see what happens. And again. And again.

If you've ever wondered what Pulitzer finalist Ed Park was like before he wrote SAME BED DIFFERENT DREAMS, PERSONAL DAYS, and AN ORAL HISTORY OF ATLANTIS, before he was published, writing novels alone in his room contemplating if anyone would ever read his books, or if you want to know what it was like to be an artist in 90s New York (or remember distinctly and feel nostalgic for that era) your dreams have come true 💭

Yu & Me Bookseller CJ @_ceeej__ sat down with @tharealedpark on pub day of THREE TENSES to discuss his new memoir, written in 1998 and rediscovered in 2020. We discussed what it was like to re-inhabit the brain of his younger self, what he misses about that time, upcoming new work, and the writing rituals he practices to get a project off the ground.

In this flip volume hardcover designed and illustrated by Jeff Wong, Pulitzer Prize finalist Ed Park presents a new tale of contemporary cosmic horror on one side, with his inspiration from Robert W. Chambers’s horror classic THE KING IN YELLOW printed on the other. On sale September 29 from Hell’s Hundred.

“A brilliant riff on the Chambers classic and the doomy, creepy now” —Paul Tremblay, New York Times bestselling author of HORROR MOVIE

“This gorgeous illustrated flip volume collects two stories bearing the same title: the lead tale from Robert W. Chambers’s influential 1895 horror collection THE KING IN YELLOW, and a contemporary riff on the material from Pulitzer finalist Park . . . Wong’s striking illustrations and an insightful introduction from Park round things out. Demonstrating how genre classics continue to inform the best modern work, this is a gift for horror fans.” —Publishers Weekly by @tharealedpark
