🐾 PARASITE TREATMENT DAY! 🐾
A donation of parasite treatments means we can do much more than simply sterilise our cats — we can also protect them from ear mites, intestinal worms, fleas and ticks. 🦠🪱🕷️
Today I went to one of our sanctuary fields and caught 9 cats who were all given their parasite treatment. ❤️
Parasite control is really important. Heavy worm burdens and infestations can leave cats weak, anaemic and in poor condition, and treating them helps keep our sterilised cats healthier and better able to cope with life outdoors. 🐈‍⬛💕

#onthisday This cat still comes to my feeding station every single night.
But her story is heartbreaking.
I had been trying to sterilise her for a long time. Every time I saw her, she was pregnant. Heavily pregnant.
Then I would see her after she had given birth.
I would count the weeks.
Eight weeks. Just eight more weeks, and I can sterilise her.
But before those eight weeks were up, she would be pregnant again.
And that could only mean one thing.
Her kittens were dead.
Litter after litter.
Birth.
Kittens.
Death.
Pregnancy again.
Four times I watched this happen.
Four litters brought into the world, only for the kittens to disappear and die within their first month.
Then came this litter. At last, some of the kittens survived long enough for me to see them growing.
The little kitten facing away from us had both eyes completely glued shut and terrible pneumonia. I took her in, and she is still with me today in one of our sanctuary fields.
The others disappeared .... dead.
And now their mother is finally sterilised.
I see her every night at my feeding station..... the very feeding station I was attacked for feeding cats at.
No more pregnancies. No more kittens. No more watching them die.
I finally broke the cycle for her.
And this is the reality of life on the streets for countless female cats. They don't simply have kittens. They can spend their entire lives trapped in an endless cycle of pregnancy, birth and loss.
This is why sterilisation matters.
Prevention is better than rescue

Three kittens..... each one forced to play out the same story: that of abandonment 💔🐾
🤍 The white kitten was dying from pneumonia in the street. I nursed him back to health, and at the end of next week he’ll be travelling to his forever home in Germany. 🇩🇪❤️
🧡 The middle-sized kitten was simply abandoned. He’s healthy, happy and ready for a home — but so far, nobody wants him.
🤍 The tiny kitten was found crawling around half-blind, with maggots in her eyes. She has made a full recovery, too.
And now? All three are stuck in a cage.
They should still be with their mothers — protected by her care, warmth and antibodies. Instead, they were taken away far too young and are growing up behind bars.
This is why prevention matters. Every unwanted litter means more tiny lives starting out this way. 💔

🐾 Just a glimpse of what yesterday looked like…
The cat with the rotten jaw, hanging flesh and horrific infection is improving. ❤️ She no longer smells of infection, there’s very little necrotic tissue, she's eating, gaining weight and feeling better.
And ironically, she’s becoming less friendly — which is actually a great sign! 😹 When feral cats are desperately ill, they can be compliant because they simply don't have the strength to care. As they recover, they start objecting to being grabbed by a stranger and having antibiotics and painkillers shoved into their very sore mouth! 😂 It means she's fighting back — and that's good.
Then there's the tiny, completely feral kitten who was separated from his mother after climbing into a car engine. He had eye and chest infections, but I could rarely catch him to treat him properly. Thanks to a puppy pen donated by @Street Hearts BG , I can now catch him when needed — and he's slowly becoming tame.😍
I said goodbye to a tiny kitten found abandoned at just 3–4 weeks old, wedged inside a tree and crying all night. After treating his ear infection, he's now adopted by a local family. ❤️
And finally, I've agreed to take in a mother cat and her 2 kittens from a campsite that's closing this week. A German tourist is taking them back to Germany, where the cooler, cloudier climate will be much safer for their delicate pink skin. ☁️🇩🇪
So that was just one day. 😅🐾❤️
One cat at a time. One problem at a time.

🐾💙 A little roundup of the last two days — and some really GOOD news! 💙🐾
Four cats in my care have now been shipped off to their forever homes — two to Romania 🇷🇴 and two to Germany 🇩🇪. 🥹❤️
None of this would have been possible without the kindness of strangers. People who see the desperate plight of the suffering kittens here in Greece 🇬🇷, and here on Thassos, and decide they want to do something to help. 🙏🌍🐾
And then there’s Bounty. 💙
Bounty was dumped by a bin when he was just six weeks old. He was completely blind. 😢
Recently, his eyes became unstable and were putting him at risk of serious infection, so the vet recommended removing both eyes. Since Bounty couldn't see anything anyway, we went ahead with the surgery. 🏥🐾
He’s now had his post-operative check-up ❤️

💔 Two tiny kittens. Two lives abandoned.
A Romanian tourist found these two tiny kittens huddled together beside a main road in Limenaria, left there to die. 😿😿
They were friendly — which means somebody had almost certainly picked them up, played with them, cuddled them and gained their trust… only to throw them away like they meant nothing. 💔
The level of coldness and cruelty involved in doing that is beyond belief. 😡
The Romanian tourist took them and asked me to care for them. But when she saw just how many kittens I already have, and how desperately I struggle to cope with them all, she didn't simply walk away.
Instead, while she was still on holiday, she worked tirelessly through her contacts and social media to find them a permanent home. 📱❤️
And she succeeded. 🙏
At the end of her holiday, she collected the two kittens and took them all the way to their forever home in Romania. 🇷🇴❤️
They are now living with a family who absolutely adore them. 🥰🐾
But there is something incredibly sad about this story too.
How is it that tourists and foreigners so often have to be the ones saving the cats of Thassos? 💔
Imagine coming here for a holiday and instead finding yourself confronted with so much suffering, abandonment and cruelty that you cannot simply enjoy your holiday and look away. The anxiety and heartbreak these animals cause visitors is something they should never have to experience. 😢
So to this wonderful Romanian tourist: thank you. ❤️🇷🇴
You didn't just pick up two kittens. You took responsibility for their entire future. You sacrificed a huge part of your holiday trying to save them, found them a family, and then personally took them to safety.
Because of you, two tiny lives that were abandoned to die now have a loving forever home. 🐾❤️
Thank you for caring when it would have been so much easier not to. 🙏❤️

🐾 Three cats, one very busy morning at the vet! 🐾
First up was a tortoiseshell female I found dying in a bin in Potamia last year. She had such a horrific mouth infection that she was unable to eat and had been reduced to a skeleton. We treated her and, because we were concerned that something like FIV might be behind repeated mouth infections, I never returned her to the streets. I wanted to be there if it happened again.
Unfortunately, it has. 💔 So today she was started on antibiotics while the infection is still in its early stages, before it can become anything like as severe as it was when I found her.
Then there was Roy 🐈‍⬛. She was abandoned as a kitten, and several years ago she lost her eye following an injury or illness. I felt the eye had deteriorated and wanted the vet to check it. She has now been prescribed some very strong antibiotic eye drops, so we'll see how she responds. 👁️💊
And then there was Jude. ❤️‍🩹
Jude was found on the streets of Panagia with a horribly infected leg, completely infested with maggots. Sadly, the leg couldn't be saved and had to be amputated. The vet was particularly concerned because the remaining skin was so badly infected that there wasn't much healthy skin available to close the wound over the stump.
So Jude needs much closer monitoring than a straightforward amputation. 🐾
Jude is also absolutely terrified. She's been in so much pain, distress and confusion that every examination has previously required sedation. 😿
But today something wonderful happened. Nancy, Jude's carer, was able to come with us — and Jude trusts her so completely that she didn't need to be sedated at all. ❤️
It was genuinely lovely to see the bond between them. In the middle of all the medical treatment, pain and fear, Jude had someone she trusted enough to feel safe. 🥹❤️

🐾 I can't do this alone — and I'm so glad I don't have to. ❤️

Here are just some of the cats I feed and care and this post is really a thank you to the donors who make it possible. 🙏

🥣 Greek Animal Rescue has provided the dry food these street cats are eating ❤️

🐱 The little motherless kitten you see eating wet food is also being supported at my station. Jessica Zeun kindly donated the wet food to supplement its meals, and it's doing so well: it's becoming friendlier every day, which is wonderful to see. 🥰

🐾 And then there are the puppy pens donated by Street Hearts BG. These have turned out to be incredibly useful!

💊 I'm using one to safely contain a completely feral kitten so I can actually catch it and make sure it receives the medication and eye drops it needs for its chest and eye infections.

🩺 I'm also using another to separate two new arrivals from the other kittens, because some of the resident kittens are under treatment for diarrhoea. Quarantining newcomers is so important.

None of this happens without help. ❤️

Food. Medication. Equipment. Every single one of these things costs money, and every donation allows me to keep doing what I do — feeding, sterilising and caring for the street cats of Thassos. 🐈🐈‍⬛

🐾 DANNY UPDATE ❤️
Danny has started toddling around the house! 🥹 He has a terrible limp, but this is a HUGE improvement from when I found him collapsed and dying on the street.
First we treated his hypothermia, then his pneumonia, and finally his massively swollen, pus-filled leg. Once the infection was under control, we discovered that underneath it all, his leg was badly broken. 💔
Thankfully, all that box rest has allowed the bone to fuse, and now he needs to start walking to rebuild the strength in his muscles, tendons and ligaments. 🐾
But Danny's saga isn't over yet. He also has eosinophilic granuloma, with huge lumps in his mouth making eating and grooming difficult. He's due an operation soon to remove the biggest lumps 😔
Honestly, I think this cat has had pretty much every condition known to man! 😂❤️
But he's walking. And that's a very big deal. 🥹🐾

🐱 ANOTHER OLD WIVES’ TALE BUSTED! 🐭
I hear all sorts of nonsense from local people about why cats shouldn’t be sterilised.
One of the favourites is: “Sterilised cats don’t hunt.” 🙄
Well… here’s an entire field full of sterilised cats successfully hunting a mouse! 😂🐭🐱🐱🐱
Hunting is instinctive feline behaviour. Sterilisation doesn’t magically remove a cat’s natural hunting instincts. They will still stalk, chase, pounce and catch prey — exactly as nature intended. 🐾
What sterilisation does prevent is the endless cycle of kittens being born into a life of hunger, disease, injury and suffering. 💔
So please, let’s stop making decisions about cats based on old wives’ tales and start looking at the facts. ❤️
Sterilise. Don’t let them breed. 🐾✂️
