🖍️Just like broken crayons still colour… broken eyes still see 👁️ just with different filters. Blindness isn’t a complete blackout, it’s more like a dodgy dimmer switch. Yet somehow people still think being blind means seeing absolutely nothing. FYI: that’s only true for about 10 to 15% of people (that’s called No Light Perception). In this video, I’m giving you a behind-the-scenes tour of how different types of blindness actually looks - and casually showcasing my elite, world-renowned, definitely-not-questionable incredible artistic talent 🎨 You’ll see a split screen of my masterpiece (as I create it from scratch) through the eyes of people living with: 🦯 Cataract 🦯 Diabetic Retinopathy 🦯 Homonymous Hemianopsia 🦯 Stargardt’s 🦯 Macular Degeneration 🦯 Retinitis Pigmentosa So remember blindness is a spectrum and there is no one way to be blind. Did You Know⁉️Most people will not meet a blind person their lifetime. This explains why so many people think that all blind people see “NOTHING” or “COMPLETE BLACKNESS” That nothingness is referred to as No Light Perception and that affects approximately only 10% of the blind population across the globe. The rest of us, still have some vision and I want to take you on a little journey where while we have this conversation you see me as people who live with five different forms of blindness would see me: Cataract, Diabetic Retinopathy, Macular Degeneration, Stargardt and Retinitis Pigmentosa. I live with Usher Syndrome that causes blindness through Retinitis Pigmentosa and hearing loss. It’s a rare, genetic and degenerative condition that has left me with just 3% vision and in a few years that will be gone too. There is no cure. Blindness is a SPECTRUM. Please be kind and don’t judge people like me because we don’t look like or act like what you think a blind should look. Video Description: Karan is standing in a black T-shirt looking at the camera. This isn’t an attention-seeking post. It’s not a pity party. It’s just me being honest. I’m sorry I’ve been quiet, and thank you to everyone who has checked in, sent messages, and reminded me that I’m loved and supported. I’ve seen them, even if I haven’t had the energy to respond. Like every other human being, I have my mental health battles too. I have been very honest about my mental health journey. And right now, I’m just not feeling 100%. I’m okay. I’m safe. I know I’m loved. But I know myself well enough to recognise when I need to slow down, step back, and give my mind some space. So if I haven’t been my usual loud, cheeky, chaotic self lately, this is why. I don’t need fixing. I don’t need pity. I just need a few quiet days to focus on myself and get my head back in the right place. Thank you for staying. Thank you for caring. Thank you for loving me through the quieter moments too. 🧑🏻‍🦯This is a message for my disabled brothers and sisters, especially the advocates (like me) who sometimes take on way more than we can handle, just because we feel like we constantly have a point to prove. Sometimes disability feels like having a body that refuses to give up, while your mind is begging for a break. Advocating, explaining, educating and fighting for basic access is amazing for our community, but it can also be exhausting mentally, physically and emotionally. So the days when you’re tired of being “strong” and you just want to exist without having to fight so damn hard for your place in the world, please listen to your mind and body. So if you are struggling today, please remember this: rest is not giving up. Asking for help is not weakness. Taking a break does not make you any less of an advocate. We don’t have to be warriors every single day. Sometimes realising that, embracing it and giving yourself a break, is the win. What an incredible honour to be asked to announce the ‘Equality in Cinema Award’ at @iffmelbourne of Melbourne at the iconic Palais Theatre. As an advocate, my heart was absolutely bursting with pride and joy to celebrate the importance of authentic representation in mainstream cinema. A huge congratulations to the one and only @rs.prasanna for directing ✨Sitaare Zameen Par🎬 a heartwarming sports comedy-drama starring Aamir Khan @aamirkhanproductions as a hotheaded basketball coach who is forced to train a team of neurodivergent adults. If you haven’t watched it yet, do yourself a favour and GO WATCH IT! And of course, the star of the evening was the one and only, incredibly adorable 💁🏻‍♀️ @simran_mangeshkar2025 one of the superstars of the film. ⭐ As someone living with a disability, I can only hope we see more mainstream films like this, where people with disabilities aren’t simply used as props to make audiences cry, feel sorry for us, or, ugh… “feel inspired.” We deserve to be characters, protagonists, comedians, heroes, villains, love interests and everything in between. What an incredible evening. Here’s to a future where disability representation in cinema isn’t the exception - it’s the norm. ❤️ Thank you for having me @mitulange and for always cheering me on like you do. Does seeing a blind person with a knife freak you out? 🔪🧑🏻‍🦯 Don’t worry I’m not Britney Spears. Something I make for myself everyday is watermelon juice🍉 I’m not kidding, I have like 3-4 glasses everyday. Now I want you to see how it is that I manage to do this. With my extreme tunnel vision I still have around 3% sight remaining (for now), so I can still use a knife without losing any fingers. It is important to remember that blindness is a spectrum, and approximately only 10% of the blind population worldwide have absolutely no light perception. The rest of us, still have some vision no matter how little or useless it is. Also I know some incredible blind chefs that are completely blind and still create MasterChef worthy dishes. In this video you see rough depictions of what blind people with the following conditions see: Severe Cataract, Diabetic Retinopathy, Stargardts, Homonymous Henianopsia, Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, Retinitis Pigmentosa/Usher Syndrome and completely blindness aka No Light Perception. Also here are two blind cooking/chopping hacks: Always use a high contrast chopping board depending on the colour of your bench and what you’re chopping. FACT: Blindness is a Spectrum‼️ What does that mean? A spectrum is a wide range of something that flows from one extreme to another. So when it comes to blindness, it goes from being legally blind to completely blind. Approximately only 10% of blind people worldwide see “nothing” or “complete darkness” known as No Light Perception, the extreme end of the blindness spectrum. The remaining 90% still have some usable vision however little or different that might be as compared to normal vision. There is no one way to be blind, and in this post you can see the same photo of me through the eyes of people that live with the following conditions: 👁️ SEVERE CATARACT 👁️ STARGARDT DISEASE 👁️ DIABETIC RETINOPATHY 👁️ HOMONYMOUS HEMIANOPSIA 👁️ RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA 👁️ MACULAR DEGENERATION 👁️ GLAUCOMA 👁️ NO LIGHT PERCEPTION Even when people have the same condition, what they see or can’t might vary greatly.
