No, because...
What do you mean they’re too old to need us?

Why are we so uncomfortable with children needing the people they feel safest with?

The goal was never teaching them to need us less— it was making sure they always knew they could.

Eight years and three kids later...
We’ll happily die on this hill.

Our children have never slept in a crib.
We’ve never had the picture-perfect nursery.

And we’ve never believed their need for us expired because of their age.

Because for us, bedtime has never been about teaching independence. It’s been another opportunity to build connection.

People sometimes ask if our three-bedroom home is big enough for five.

And we always smile.
Because they must not know...
how much room there is in our hearts.
Or in our bed.

One day they’ll sleep through the night.
One day they won’t come looking for us anymore.
We just don’t believe in rushing that day to arrive.

If you’ve found your way here, to That Space Between, then maybe you feel it too.

That quiet knowing that nothing lasts forever.

We are all living in the in-between. The ordinary moments that somehow become the ones we miss the most.

Our days are full, the laundry is piled up, the sink is full of dishes.

Texts go unanswered and sometimes it takes us days to return a phone call.

Not because we don’t care, but because we’ve intentionally built a life around being available to them.

To the questions. The sandy toes. The stories. The afternoon adventures. The slow mornings.

We know these summers won’t last forever.
One day they’ll be off chasing dreams and writing adventures of their own.
And while we’ll cheer them on with everything we have...
We’ll quietly miss this.

The ordinary Wednesdays.
The little hands reaching for ours.

So until then...
We’re pretty booked up.

Our hope for you is this:
Don’t wait for the big moments to realize how precious they are. Soak in the ordinary Tuesday. The regular Wednesday.
The slow Sunday morning.

Because one day, these beautifully ordinary days will be the ones your heart reaches back for most.

Forever parenting according to our children’s needs.

One of the greatest gifts parenthood has given us has been learning to trust our children—and ourselves—over the outside noise.

We’ve realized that just because something is “common” doesn’t mean it’s right for our family.

— and just because our culture often “normalizes” disconnection doesn’t mean craving deeper connection is something we need to “grow out” of.

For us, parenting has never been about following a timeline.

—or proving a point.
—or convincing anyone else to do what we do.

It’s been about paying attention.

To the child in front of us.
To their needs.
To our intuition.

We don’t believe our way is the only way.

But we’ve stopped feeling the need to justify it.

When you begin parenting according to your child’s needs instead of someone else’s expectations...

—the outside noise starts to get a little quieter.

And the connection you long for gets a a whole lot louder.

People always ask,
“Aren’t you worried your kids are missing out?”

— actually we’re worried they would if we weren’t doing this.

Afternoons spent collecting worms, asking a hundred questions, following their curiosity wherever it leads...

As Type C parents who genuinely thought we’d be more of a “stick to the schedule” homeschool family, we have realized
less = more.

Less rushing.
Less checking boxes.
Less worrying about whether we’re doing enough.

Homeschooling has allowed for more connection, more wonder, more opportunities to let their questions lead, more time— together and outside.

So if you’re wondering, “Am I doing enough?”
You are.
And if you’re worried that the hours spent outdoors playing, exploring, and getting “off track” are somehow setting you behind— They’re not.

This isn’t a detour from learning.
It is learning.
These moments.
These questions.
These muddy hands and pockets full of treasures.

It’s more than school, it’s their childhood unfolding.

We think about this all the time.
We are raising future husbands and fathers.

Yes, right now it might just look like raising little boys—

Boys who still reach for ours hands.

Boys who still want to help in the kitchen.

Boys who still think standing beside me while we bake is the best place to be.

But we know these days won’t last forever.

One day they’ll need us differently.

One day they’ll build lives of their own.

We don’t believe the goal is teaching them to need us less.
the goal is helping them know we are always here.

That home is safe.
That they’re loved.
That they belong.

Because one day these little boys will become someone’s husband— someone’s father—

And when that day comes, we hope they carry this love with them.

We hope they know how to comfort because they were comforted.

How to listen because they were listened to.

How to lead with gentleness because gentleness was given to them first.

So for now, I’ll say yes to the extra hugs.
The questions.
The helping hands covered in flour.

Because I’m not just making memories.

We’re building a relationship they’ll carry with them long after they’ve left the kitchen.

And that’s what home is—
A place that stays with you long after you’ve grown.

Eight years into parenthood, one of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is this:
Not everything that looks like dependence is dependence.

Often, it’s connection.

It’s attachment.

It’s a child building the safety they’ll eventually carry within themselves.

We’ve been told a lot of things over the years.
—Breastfed too long.
—Don’t nurse in public.
—Co-sleeping is wrong.
—Homeschooling will make them weird.
—That eventually we’d change our minds.

And while we’ve certainly changed and evolved as parents, here are some things that have remained true:

We’ve never regretted choosing connection.
We’ve never regretted being intentional.
We’ve never regretted trusting our intuition over outside opinions.

The beautiful thing about parenting is that eventually the results begin to speak for themselves.

Not in perfection.
Not in flawless children.

But in relationship, in trust, in belonging— in children who know they’re deeply loved.

Because many of the things we’re told create dependence...
are actually creating security.

For the fathers carrying the weight of providing for the people they love while wondering what moments they’re missing.

The fathers who are not home on this day to share it with their families—

We want you to know this:

You are not absent from the life you’re building.

You live in the stories your children tell.
In the lessons they’ve learned.
The safety they feel.
The home you’ve helped create.

Your ‘presence’ reaches further than your physical presence ever could.

We are forever grateful for the life you give us—
The opportunities that are possible because of all that you pour into the home even when you are not here to see it.

This moment made me ask myself …

What do I want my children to believe about me?
Do I want them to believe I’m always watching?
Or do I want them to know I’m always here?

and there is a difference…

One creates fear.
The other creates safety.

As parents, it’s easy to focus on behavior.
What was said.
What was done.
What needs correcting.

But lately, as I’ve been finding myself closer to hitting “my limits” being stretched at home, often alone, I find myself wondering what happens when we look a little deeper.

When we ask what kind of relationship we’re building underneath these moments.

I don’t want my children to tell the truth because they’re afraid of being caught.

I want them to tell the truth because they know they’re loved.

I want them to know that mistakes don’t threaten belonging.

That hard conversations don’t threaten connection.

That they never have to earn their place in our family.

For us that is what home is.

Not a place where we get everything right.

But a place where we can be fully seen and still deeply loved.
Where we can feel deeply, express ourselves, share different opinions, get messy and live truthfully.

What is one thing you hope your children know without question when they think about home?

I asked God why He didn't save me from every battle.

He said,

"Because I wasn't raising a son.

I was raising a father."

So when He called and asked,

"Whom shall I send?"

I knew my answer.

"Here am I.

Send me."
