This look is very important to me as it represents my OCD on a personal level. The wings represent growth in the sense of how far I’ve come whilst suffering with this illness… and the blue represents one of my biggest obsessions that I have overcome through years of CBT. I have suffered with this illness since primary school. I was diagnosed around the age of 11 and it’s something that’s going to affect me for the rest of my life. I’ve been in and out of hospital admissions, put on different medications, in camhs throughout all my teenage years, and been through many CBT sessions/treatments that have lasted years.

OCD awareness week is a chance for me to use my platform to speak up about how serious this mental illness is and raise more awareness around it as it’s still such a misunderstood condition. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder isn’t an adjective. It’s not a neat tidy cleaning quirk. There are many different forms of OCD, which yes can be centred around cleanliness and being neat… but what makes it OCD is the Compulsions that come with the Obsessions. Compulsions are mental and or physical rituals you MUST do in order to make the Obsessions go away/cancel them out. The cycle is repetitive and never stops. The Obsessions/intrusive thoughts are the worst things imaginable to you. They are graphic and disturbing and having them constantly in your head makes you feel like an awful human which is when the Compulsions come into play. The Compulsions give you a tiny sense of relief until the cycle repeats itself again. The intuitive thoughts never go away. Everyone gets intrusive thoughts but the difference with OCD is that it feels 100% real and if you don’t do Compulsions the thoughts will come true.

Please think next time you want to say ‘I’m so OCD’ as you have no idea how debilitating and harmful OCD really is to those who suffer from it.
