Today, we have a collaboration with @thatgingerguy51 about the M4 Sherman’s Gen II program!

In 1943, not even a year after the first Sherman tanks rolled off the assembly lines, a new program started called “Gen II” which sought to make the Sherman more survivable. The original Sherman variants had small escape hatches over the driver and bow gunner, which meant if the crew needed to bail out, they might have difficulty. Additionally, early Sherman’s placed ammunition anywhere they had space, including inside the sponsons. The Gen II program looked to address these problems. Firstly, to address the small escape hatches over the driver and bow gunner, the front plate was angled slightly less, going from 57 to 47 degrees from vertical. This gave more space in front of the turret for larger escape hatches which made bailing out easier if needed. To solve the other issue, the Army decided to create “Wet Stowage”. Instead of having ammunition everywhere, all the ammunition was moved to two separate 35 round racks in the middle of the vehicle underneath the turret basket where it was much less likely to be hit. The reason it was called “Wet Stowage” is because each shell was surrounded by a gel mixture made of water, ethylene-glycol, and a rust inhibitor. If the ammunition was hit, the gel would spill out and quench any fires. When the Gen II’s started entering combat, crew fatality rates in the Sherman dropped to just 18% and ammunition fires dropped by over 90%, which was far lower than almost any other tank of the war.

In conclusion, the Gen II program was a wildly successful overhaul of the Sherman and made the tank much more survivable. It would be the Gen II Sherman tanks that would go on to be mounted with the 76mm M1 cannon and HVSS suspension, all of which would lead to tanks like the M4A3E8(76)W.
