As we wrap-up AAPI Heritage Month and Mental Health Awareness Month, I want to touch on mental health and Asian-Americans. I think it’s a common experience in AAPI communities that we struggle with our identities and a range of pressures. I feel that many of us feel discouraged to recognize mental health and seek out help. Additionally, immigrants and refugees face even more difficulty (ex: trauma, language barriers, access to insurance, etc).

Let’s talk about some of the reasons why AAPI struggle with mental health:
✨ MODEL MINORITY MYTH: This stereotype is a micro-aggression that inaccurately portrays AAPI as “fully integrated,” benefiting from systems of power and not having to overcome any racial challenges. This stigma puts pressure on AAPI that we have to live-up to this expectation, and that in order to be successful, you can’t show signs of weakness or failure – like admitting mental health issues.

✨ TRADITIONAL VALUES/FAMILY: Great value is placed on families in AAPI communities – defined roles/functions, hierarchy, obligations, etc. One’s ability to take care of their family and represent their family in a honorable way is held in high importance. Therefore, mental illness can be seen as detracting, and can bring feelings of guilt and shame. Bringing shame to your family is the ultimate disappointment for many AAPI.

✨CULTURAL TABOO: The topic of mental health has historically been considered taboo in many Asian cultures. Feelings aren’t often shared in households, and many children grow-up trying to control/hide their emotions. Mental health is often denied, dismissed or neglected, and turning to a family member for support may not be an option. Additionally, 1st generation AAPI may feel like a burden or ungrateful in light of the sacrifices their parents made to emigrate.

Combating stigmas around mental health and prioritizing mental health is especially important within AAPI communities right now due to increased violence and discrimination. It takes strength to ask for help, and in order to better serve our families and communities, we need to be healthier versions of ourselves.

Kinda chic to escape to Onera Wimberley ✨

Entertaining a preteen all summer had me craving an escape to rest and recharge. Tucked away in the Texas Hill Country, @onerawimberley is about a short 45 drive from Austin and San Antonio. You can select one of their beautifully designed Greenhouse or Treehouse cabins surrounded by nature and complete with elevated amenities. It was the perfect place to getaway for a bit, cool off in their infinity pool, and take in stunning views from a private hot tub.

A friendly reminder that we all deserve to slow down and reconnect.
