I’ve built up a lot of pressure for myself around this post - slowly over the past almost 2 years - so please 🐻 with me!

The big news here is a change of name & Small Business Saturday felt like the time to finally make the change! It’s been 14+ years of @pkat44 which has served me very well, and has been a wonderful way to share little bits of creativity from my world. But this is a year of some big changes for me! So with that comes the need to make this a space more inclusive of my art, as well as a space recognizable to people who didn’t know me in college 🤓

I have been a full-time teacher in NYC public schools since 2013. The past 3 years I have stepped into a dream role as an instructional coach at my school. And this year …🥁🍗 … I made the move to part-time in order to pursue my art with more intention, consistence, and a clearer conscience. “Creativity without guilt” is a phrase that is jotted on a post-it on my desk from a recent therapy session. For years, I have felt so conflicted when I wanted to sit down to draw or paint or knit or clay, but there was a stack of papers to grade and a lesson to plan and slides to make. I tried doing the side hustle, and working on my business in the evenings and weekends, but that led to late orders, stress about art instead of joy all of the time, and so many refunds it wasn’t financially feasible anymore. I also felt so much guilt about not being able to maintain my business while teaching when I saw others seemingly successfully managing both.

There’s so much more “middle” to this story, but I want to get to some of the fun stuff too! It has been truly incredible having 2 days a week at home to focus solely on my art. A complete role reversal where I feel the freedom and clarity of mind to know that molding that tiny tomato out of clay is what I am supposed to be doing with my time! It might sound silly, and I’m still getting used to it (and doing a lot of unlearning in the process), but it is the first time in my life that art isn’t “the other thing,” and it feels so, so good.

It may have been a 6 hour drive to get here, but I got to start my leaf peeping season 🍂👀!

Sharing some of the process for making this beautiful French beaded tulip! I have been learning from @henripurnell ‘s excellent instructional guides - he has done a great job of writing and illustrating clear explanations of the process, and his guides include videos showing each step which have been so helpful!

I love learning more wire work & finding new ways to incorporate beads into my art 🪡 it’s also so rewarding to feel yourself grow in a new skill 😌

I was struggling to find motivation to do clay this week, so I started doodling on these matchboxes instead! It was fun and freeing to not worry about a perfect design, and just enjoy playing with some colors and patterns. I love the frilly details on each one!

☕️ This week was my first time really doing “restocks” of my past charms & it was so rewarding to create these little coffee beans again and see how I’ve grown!

My first time I was pretty excited about them - getting some texture and color - but this time I feel like I spent more time on the little details, and came out with a more realistic charm. What do you think?

Sharing the process from yesterday’s 🥝 cane! I am so happy with how it turned out & feel energized about trying more cane designs!

I would never have thought to make a kiwi, so thank you to the couple who requested it at last Sunday’s market. This was a great challenge for me & really helped me grow my confidence around canes. If you have other designs you want to see, let me know in the comments!
