What a dope opportunity to open the ceremony and moderate a deep conversation as Pensole Lewis College unveiled The Stu/deo in honor of the iconic @therealruthecarter & in case you live under a rock - Ruth is a two-time Academy Award winner whose first big chapters came in @officialspikelee joints like Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X, and she went on to make history with Black Panther and Wakanda Forever. Her touch is on so many films that define our culture — and she’s still pushing the craft forward with her recent work in Sinners, @teyanataylor powerful Black Dandy look at the 2025 Met Gala, and her upcoming project on couture pioneer Ann Lowe with @serenawilliams. I also had the pleasure of interviewing @plcdetroit students and the amazingly talented @sydneygjames. We had such a real and heartfelt conversation about our culture, how it shows up in design, and the way clothing carries our stories on screen — stories Ruth E. Carter has trailblazed for decades. Grateful to witness and be part of a moment that honored her brilliance and reminded us how powerful representation truly is. by @thatssoebony_

Last night was one for the books.The @detnaacp 71st Annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner was nothing short of powerful. To celebrate and honor pioneers in the ongoing fight for justice, including @rubybridgesofficial and @repjeffries, was truly an honor and a reminder of the kind of rooms our ancestors prayed we would one day stand in.This year marked my third year hosting the red carpet for the country’s largest sit-down dinner, hosted by the largest #NAACP chapter, right here in #Detroit.I had the opportunity to run into the who’s who, from politicians and actors to moguls, community leaders, and change-makers. Yet one of the most meaningful moments of the night was sharing candid and inspiring conversation with the historic mother-daughter anchor duo @glewiswxyz and Diana Lewis.My love for journalism started when I was 9 years old. Ever since, I have been walking toward the work, the purpose, and the calling. Those two beautiful women reminded me that I am exactly where I need to be.Special shoutout to the one and only @revwendellanthony and @yeskamcan, true trailblazers behind this phenomenal and historic event.I love what I do. To be young, gifted and Black.My time at @19thnews has carried me through a range of emotions. Through every emotion, I remained dauntless — courage to stand boldly, remain steadfast and keep moving forward.As #America enters its 250th year of independence, I am reminded that people who look like me have embodied that courage for centuries — long before this nation ever declared itself free.And for the Black woman — the Black enterprising woman, and especially the Black woman who dares to step into journalism — confronting the world’s limited view of us can be daunting. But like everything else we touch, we have found a way to flip even that on its head.Still, we stand.With confidence, we stand.And every step forward is a testament to the women who came before us, the women standing beside us and the women who will follow.That is what the #Revolutionary event hosted by @19thnews highlighted. @nabjofficial President and @19thnews Editor-at-Large @emarvelous led a conversation grounded in that very truth. All praises to God, the Most High.Last night, I was honored with three Excellence in Journalism Awards through the Detroit Society of Professional Journalists, and my heart is still full.This moment was special because I got to stand in it with my people. My peers. My mentors. My loved ones. The ones who know the work, respect the work, and understand the passion, discipline, and sacrifice it takes to produce excellent journalism.My friend and colleague @samdrinkswater is truly gifted in the political reporting space, and seeing his talent celebrated alongside mine made the night even more meaningful because he deserves every bit of celebration. There is no secret that my amazing mentors @ieditnred inspires me to be greater, @jayallen6 continues to push me toward higher heights and to be honored in the same room and celebrated alongside them is something words, ironically enough, can barely hold.@aliciamoniquenails, @huelperkinsretired, and the beautiful Felicia Henderson have always been in my corner, cheering me on with so much love and intention. Standing alongside journalism legends is a privilege I do not take lightly.Most importantly, my mommy and my aunty were there to say, “shine on, babygirl.” That feeling right there is the blessing. To have the women who prayed for me, pushed me, encouraged me, supported me, and poured everything they could into helping me become the woman I am today standing there with me is something only God could ordain.I am overjoyed. Last night truly owed me nothing!I started the evening at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus, where legislative leaders including @ltgovgilchrist, @rephaleystevens, and @jocelynbenson spoke to the power, legacy, and continued impact of Black leadership in Michigan.As always, it was such a joy running into the amazing @sarahanthony517. ✨Then I closed out the night at the @dpscdfoundation Hall of Fame Gala, celebrating excellence, legacy, and the people helping shape the future of Detroit’s students.I ran into some of my favorite people throughout the gala!A full-circle, full-heart kind of night.#detroit #dancethenightaway #saturdayvibes by @thatssoebony_
