Veegroni (my original)

Just off the end of Negroni Week, finishing out Negroni Month, I’m bringing this original creation.

A couple of months ago, after seeing ads for Remy V @remyv_us I was able to snag a bottle. It’s a true eau de vie, a distilled product from grapes. But it’s not like what you find from the Nordics.

Nearly completely clear, on the nose you get fresh grapes, candied pears, and melon nuances, slight florals. Tasting yields subtle fruit and floral with a hint of citrus. In the mouth, there is a definite rich texture.

Sounded like the perfect thing to turn into a Negroni.

Once again, the challenge is picking the right sweet vermouth. I did a couple of iterations before deciding on Dolin @vermouthdolin. And of course, it’s not a Negroni without @campari

Veegroni

1 oz Remy V
1 oz Dolin
1 oz Campari

Add mixing glass with plenty of ice, stir until frosty. Pour over a BFC. Enjoy.

If you can find some Remi V, make this and tell me what you think! Cheers!

Man Maker

Couple of weeks ago, @cocktailgrendel posted this drink that caught my attention. It’s a cross between a Vieux Carré and a Black Manhattan - two of my favorite things. The drink was created by Hayden Lambert @travlinboy Above Board in Melbourne @aboveboardbarmelb (and highlighted by legend Frederic Yarm @fredericyarm.

It surprised me at how the taste sensations hit. This is incredibly delicious, a slow sipper to be sure.

Cheers!

Man Maker

¾ oz (22.5 ml) Rye (Rittenhouse)
¾ oz (22.5 ml) Cognac (Hennessy VSOP)
¾ oz (22.5 ml) Amaro Averna
¾ oz (22.5 ml) Bénédictine
1 dash Bitters (Angostura)
1 dash Bitters (Ango Orange)

Add ingredients to a mixing glass, stir until bitterly cold, strain into an appropriate glass. Enjoy!

7 Amar Ago

I saw that @coachvinococktails posted this the other day, and as I read down the specs, I realize that holy crap I actually had all the ingredients! And that, fam, never happens on a complicated drink. So of course I had to make it!

7 AMARO AGO
Recipe by Coach Vino

.25 oz (7.5 ml) Aperol @aperolspritzofficial
.25 oz (7.5 ml) Campari @campariofficial
.25 oz (7.5 ml) Amaro Nonino @noninoamaro
.25 oz (7.5 ml) Amaro Montenegro @amaromontenegro_it
.25 oz (7.5 ml) Cynar @cynarusa .25 oz (7.5 ml) Averna @avernaus
.25 oz (7.5 ml) Braulio @braulio.italia
1 oz (30 ml) Smith & Cross@smithandcrossrum
•75 oz (22.5 ml) Lime Juice .25 oz (7.5 ml) Simple Syrup

Shake 10-15 seconds
Strain into a cocktail glass

Now I must confess, when I made this, I completely slid right past the simple syrup. Do not repeat that mistake when you make it. It’s not the bitterness of the Amari, it was the lime. You definitely need the simple to balance that out. So this is now officially in the “repeat” list, and I’m looking forward to enjoying it a whole lot more!

Cheers!

Gin and Coke

A slight departure from my usual fare. About a week and a half ago somebody in the #CocktailNerd community posted about the joys of gin and Coke. I was skeptical. We had a brief exchange and I was encouraged to find some Mexican Coke – still made with cane sugar versus HFCS - and try it out.

I’m a sucker for anything with gin in it, so I did. Fam. OMG. Color me surprised.

I can’t tell you exactly why this works or even how it’s possible that it works, ut I can’t tell you it very definitively works.

I found myself in the position of making a gin choice based on how close to “bottle kill” I was, and couldn’t have been happier with this outcome. Gin No. 1 from New Deal Distillery in Portland is not a full London dry but it’s pretty adjacent. More viscous due to the infusion process, it carries Juniper, dry citrus, sage, and cracked black pepper. Absolutely great stuff. Mexican Coke needs no introduction, it’s the Coke of your youth - provided you managed to enjoy Coke before the formula change in 1980.

Gin & Coke
2oz gin New Deal Gin No. 1
4oz Mexican Coke
Ice (definitely @ashleysapartmentbar “poor people ice!)

Pour it all into the glass over ice, give it a slight stir. Enjoy.

Caution: if you’ve got a full bottle, do not do the bottle kill maneuver. Tonight, there was just enough left for two of these. YMMV.

Greenpoint

In the middle of my feed yesterday, @cocktailchap was celebrating the return of Yellow Chartreuse to his home bar. Chartreuse is one of those things of which I never run out – even if I have to order shipped from London, via @masterofmalt. Now that I’m spending more time abroad, I’ll slap it myself. But both yellow and green are staples - even though I am quite envious of the smoking deal he got!

Anyway, seeing it, sparked my desire, and I commented that I would make it right then. It actually took me another hour, but here it is:

Greenpoint.
12/3oz / 50ml Rye Whiskey @lot40
1/2oz / 15ml Sweet Vermouth @puntemes_it because why use plain sweet vermouth for a special drink?
1/2oz / 15ml Yellow Chartreuse @chartreuse1605
1 dash Aromatic Bitters @angosturabittersofficial
1 dash Orange Bitters @kingfloyds

Stir until super cold, strain into a chilled Nick & Nora glass. Express an orange peel over the drink. If you’re one of those people that need a garnish, drop it in.

Highly satisfying. The rye is spicy and carries the weight, the chartreuse is slightly sweet and the Punt e Mes ads depth. There’s a hint of bitterness, but this xtremely well balanced, highly drinkable. Completely recommended. Cheers! If you make one, let me know what you think. #craftcocktails #mixology #homebartender #drinkstagram

12 Mile Limit

I learned of this cocktail when reading about the Prohibition era. The United States asserted that anything within 12 miles of the coastline was still “The United States“ but that once you crossed that line, you were in International Waters. This led to the establishment of slightly offshore… let’s just call them entertainment centers. Which this drink commemorates.

Earlier this week, @johanthebartender made one of these, which reminded me how much I like them. So of course, I had to make one myself, and what a better time than for the Friday afternoon happy hour edition of @highproofpreacher ‘s Cocktail Club?

12 Mile Limit
1 oz (30ml) Rum @planterayrum 5 yr Barbados, but you do you - it’s supposed to be @therealmccoyrum
1/2 oz (15ml) Cognac @hennessy VSOP
1/2 oz (15ml) Rye Whiskey @lot40
1/2 oz (15ml) Grenadine (sadly I was out of my homemade, so I used what I had)
1/2 oz (15ml) Lemon Juice

Shake until frosty, serve up in an appropriate glass, garnished with a lemon twist. Cheers!

Danger Zone

Earlier in the day, I watched @please_dont_suck_cocktails make what he described as a “let your heart guide you“ cocktail. And I was pretty intrigued. Probably helped by the fact that he backed the video the Kenny Loggins tune but you know… Anyway, I decided to make it.

Danger Zone

2 oz Rye @lot40
1.5 oz Ameretto @disaronno_official
1/4 oz Amaro Averna @averna_italia @avernaus
Luxardo Maraschino splash to finish @luxardooffical @luxardousa
Cocktail cherry garnish (I passed)

Verdict: no regrets. And the danger zone that this places you in is the desire to drink three or four of them. Let me know what do you think

Cheers!

I just opened a new Laphroaig last week, and when I saw this rendition of the Bobby Burns by @viva.la.cocktail I absolutely knew I had to make it. I’m no stranger to using a splash of Laphroaig in a cocktail, but normally I drink it neat, maybe with a drop of saline. But this called to me, so let’s go.

The bulk of the work is done by the peated Scotch, which is lightened a bit by Drambuie, the Isle of Skye liqueur based on honey, herbs, and Scotch, with a splash of Ango to balance it, and a little lemon oil to brighten it.

Bobby Burns

1/4 oz Drambuie @drambuie
3/4 oz Sweet Vermouth @cinzano.official
2 oz Scotch Whisky @laphroaig
1 dash Ango @angosturahouse
1 Lemon Peel

Spec calls for the Drambuie, Vermouth, Scotch and Ango in your mixing glass over ice, stirred until seriously cold, strain into an appropriate glass – I normally use a Nick and Nora. Then espress the lemon peel over it and garnish with it.

Given the lateness of the hour, I opted to build it in the glass over what @ashleysapartmentbar calls “poor people ice” and while I squeezed the lemon peel o did not garnish.

Deep, tasty, only slightly bitter. As I was about halfway through, I realized that I should’ve squared the circle by using an aisle of sky single malt: Talisker @talisker (historically one of my absolute favorites). I will absolutely do this – probably won’t share it with you. 😉

Cheers! If you make it, let me know what you think!

Notgroni - a @thatstanhanks original

I love a good Negroni and I’m super picky about the choice of gin and vermouth - to the point that I ask what the bartender is pouring before I order at a bar. Imagine my surprise when the inspiration for this hit me.

I was making a pre-dinner spritz for @isometric_andrea and somehow the “swap Sarti instead of Campari” hit. Which then required me to step down the intensity of the sweet vermouth to Antica Formula.

Being also busy cooking I didn’t grab a good photo and tonight I decided I wanted to try it as a cocktail. And what do you know, it still slaps hard. Softer, much less bitter, fruity, slightly floral… it’s just delicious. And bonus - if you put it in a big glass and top with prosecco it’s also awesome

Notgroni

1.5 oz gin @graywhale
1.5 oz Sarti @sartispritz
1.5 oz Antica Formula @anticaformula

Stir over ice until cold enough. Ideally serve over a BFC (or put in a spritz glass with ice and top with prosecco!)

Cheers!

Espresso Negroni

I originally saw this on TikTok a couple of years ago, and made it immediately because (A) I love Negronis, (B) I love, espresso, and (C) I had a Moka pot….

The idea is simple: make espresso in a Moka pot, but use sweet vermouth instead of water. You wind up with a perfect infusion of coffee into the sweet vermouth in a way that you do not get the cold methods.

Spec:

Note: this is for two drinks, because for technical reasons, that just works best. You can do four, you cannot do one. I don’t make the rules.

Start with 3 ounces sweet vermouth – I always use Cinzano, because that just works best. Fight me.

Prepare your Moka pot as per usual, pouring in the vermouth instead of water, and let the pot do its magic.

Measure your resulting coffee infused vermouth, pour it into your mixing glass. Whatever that number is, measure an equal portion of gin, and Campari, both going into the mixing glass.

Add ice, stir about 40 seconds, split into two DOF glasses with a BFC. My partner adores a cherry garnish, so that’s what I did – canonically, this should probably be orange peel.

If you make this, do let me know what you think. I assure you this is life-changing! Cheers!

This Bitter Pill

A few days ago, Daniel @anatomyofadrink posted this delicious concoction. It is spirit-forward and definitely tropical. At first sip, this is sweeter than I expected – I suspect if I’d used Planteray Stiggins’ Fancy vs Cruzan it wouldn’t have been quite as sweet. Definitely something to test in the future. There’s just a hint of the bitterness of the Campari and the herbaceous of the Montenegro and a whole bunch of pineapple. Delicious. Definitely makes the cut for future stirs!

THIS BITTER PILL
1½ oz. / 45 ml. pineapple rum @cruzanrum
¾ oz. / 22.5 ml. Amaro Montenegro @amaromontenegro_it
¾ oz. / 22.5 ml. Campari @campari
2 dashes orange bitters @kingfloyds

Add all ingredients to mixing glass, stir with ice until it’s cold and then keep stirring some. Strain into a glass over a BFC (I opted for a sphere from our friends at @abstract_ice)

As I said, it was sweeter than I expected, but it’s still very delicious. It is the sort of thing that you could either hammer, or just sip on. Cheers!

Lost in the Supermarket

A couple of days ago, @mixocutor shared this delightful drink originally created by @fredericyarm. The name is evocative, the 1979 song from @the_clash still plays on repeat in my head just as it did that summer. So of course I was curious! The specs called to me, and OMG I could not be happier with the result.

Lost in the Supermarket

22.5ml (3/4oz) Laphroaig
22.5ml (3/4oz) Laird’s Apple Brandy
15ml (0.5oz) Drambuie
15ml (0.5oz) Punt e Mes
15ml (0.5oz) Campari
1 dash Angostura bitters
1 dash Peychaud’s bitters
1 dash Orange bitters
Stir on ice until chilled.

Strain over a big ice cube. Express oil with an orange twist and garnish with it.

I only had half as much Punt e Mes as I needed, so I supplemented with @ramazzotti. It works surprisingly well.

Spirit forward stirred cocktails mostly bitter are my jam. There was nothing amiss in this at all. And the color! It looks so much like a strong tea. After a few sips, @isometric_andrea commented that this would be the perfect concoction for a tradwife to put in her Stanley cooler, passing off her coping mechanism as iced tea.

In any case, it was absolutely delicious, and has entered the recurring lineup.

Cheers!
