I have the best job. It was an absolute honor to host @joshsilverauthor last night for his LA book tour stop. Fruit Fly is a novel you have to talk to other people about. That’s why the publisher keeps reprinting and why we had a massive crowd last night.
It feels good to see people excited for a book and author, and Josh was so kind, and at home in the swirl around him. That’s probably his background in mental health work but also his awareness of the surreality of this moment. I hadn’t given much thought about who gets to tell queer stories and what their intentions are. I’m thinking about it now.
By the way, it’s an excellent year for fiction, if you’re finding time for reading. I hope you are. My thanks to Gary Janetti, who moderated brilliantly, is deeply funny, and doesn’t suffer fools. taken in First Congregational Church of Los Angeles by @thatwouldbedandy

Rivers flow backwards
Valleys are high
Mountains are level
Truth is alive
I’m perfectly fine
And I don’t miss you
The sky is green
And the grass is blue

I listened to her music all day. I called and texted friends. I scrolled through endless tributes here, and took comfort. I’m sure you did too. Her life was a gift and somehow her passing is too. A way to unite in a world that seems incapable of such a thing.
For me, she is 9 to 5, and compassion, and all of those songs. My favorite is Grass is Blue. She was happily married for almost 60 years. How could she know that pain? She saw everything. by @thatwouldbedandy

Alrighty! I was thrilled to find this on my desk Monday and will be reading it over the coming week. Blue Velvet and Showgirls are two of my favorite films so I’m looking forward to his assessment of them. And Twin Peaks and Dune, obviously. I hope he remembers his time as Trey MacDougal on Sex & the City fondly.
Please help me manifest the LA event for this one, which is out at all fine indie bookstores on September 29th. Remember, when you shop indies you don’t end up paying for ridiculous Venice weddings, space rockets, and the gutting of the Washington Post. Just saying. by @thatwouldbedandy

If you have a chance to see the Yoko Ono exhibition which opened at the Broad today, please go. You may have already decided how you feel about Ono based on any number of small facts; after all, she is an individual and artist who is hard to define. I was fascinated by her in that way that I am fascinated by all women who are blamed for the short comings of men going back to, oh I don’t know, Eve.
She’s a complicated figure for sure, and David Sheff wrote an excellent biography of her just last year. Pick it up at your local indie bookstore.
I was excited for the show which covers the width and breadth of her 70+ year career. It’s an excellent exhibition and invites participation from the audience.
Something that should not have surprised me but did. I was deeply moved and kind of emotional by the time we reached the final room, where people were invited to write notes to their mothers and post them on the wall. I couldn’t think of anything to say. Maybe, thank you, and it all turned out beautifully. taken in The Broad by @thatwouldbedandy
