Let me introduce myself. I’m Sjors, founder of The Art Assistant✨

With years of experience managing galleries, organizing art fairs, and working closely with artists, I know how demanding the art world can be - creatively and strategically.

I started The Art Assistant to support artists and galleries on both an artistic and business level. From curatorial thinking to practical execution, I help turn ideas into plans and structure.

Art deserves focus. I help create the space for that.

Want to work together? Send en a DM or visit my website. Looking forward!

I’m @manuelaklerkx , founding director of [re]Discoveries. My career in contemporary art began more than three decades ago.

After graduating in French Language & Literature and Philosophy, I moved to Brussels in 1992 to work with gallerist Rodolphe Janssen. It was the beginning of a life in contemporary art that later took me to Milan, where I worked with galleries including Massimo De Carlo and Karsten Greve, before founding my own gallery, KLERKX, in 2004.

Over the years, I have worked with artists, galleries, collectors and institutions across the international art world. What continues to drive me is the artist and the quality of the work itself. I believe talent has no age, prescribed route or required background. What matters is whether the work is authentic, distinctive and has something real to say.

Today, I advise and coach artists, helping them sharpen their practice, understand their position and build the right network around their work. I am interested in creating meaningful connections, not simply visibility, but relationships that can help an artist’s practice grow and endure. This belief also lies behind [re]Discoveries, which I founded in 2022.

Alongside this, I am Head of Gallery & VIP Relations for Art Rotterdam and Unseen/Photo and work with GalleryViewer. I co-authored Ontroerend goed: van kunst kijken naar kunst kopen (Meulenhoff, 2018) with my husband Oscar van Gelderen. For me, it always comes back to the same thing: recognising strong, authentic work and connecting it with the people who can truly help it move forward.

$Open calls can lead to great opportunities, but they can also cost you time and money without much in return. It’s not always easy to know which ones are worth applying for, so here are five tips to help you choose. 1. Find the right fit Does the theme, discipline and eligibility match your practice? If you have to stretch your work to make it fit, you can probably skip this one. 2. Know what you want An exhibition, funding for new work, studio time or useful connections? Choose opportunities that support what you need right now. 3. Know your worth Don’t overspend on big promises and look beyond the application fee. Production, shipping, travel and insurance can add up. Check what’s covered and what you’ll pay yourself. 4. Check who’s behind it Look into the organisers, jury and previous editions. What did selected artists actually receive? If the offer is “exposure”, find out who will see your work. 5. Make your time count How much work does the application involve? Can you reuse the proposal or portfolio afterwards? Consider whether the opportunity is worth the time you’ll put in. Save this for the next open call that catches your eye, and let me know if you need some extra eyes👀 \#TheArtAssistant #OpenCalls #ArtistOpportunities #ArtistSupport #ArtCareer by @the.artassistant$

Last week, I had the pleasure of representing @nadinereulingsphotography and her work at @hungryeyefair .

In the lead-up to the fair, we worked closely on the selection of works, the presentation and all the practical details involved. This was the first time Nadine presented her photography to the public, which made it especially exciting to see it all come together.

The response to her work was wonderful. A very successful debut, and one I’m happy to have been part of🤍

Selling is hard, and it’s almost nobody’s favorite part of being an artist. However when you’re exhibiting without a gallery, you’re often responsible for the whole sales process yourself. From explaining the work to discussing prices and following up afterwards. These 5 tips can help you feel more prepared when someone shows real interest.

1. Know your prices
Have a clear and consistent price list ready, including sizes, editions and framing if relevant. You don’t want to start calculating or doubting the moment someone asks what a work costs.

2. Make buying easy
Think through the practical side beforehand. How can someone pay? Can they take the work home immediately? Do you offer delivery? Can you send an invoice? Make the next step as simple as possible.

3. Know your story
Think beforehand about what you want to tell people about your work, and keep that first explanation short. Give them enough context to understand the work, without immediately telling them everything. If they’re interested, the conversation can naturally go deeper from there.

4. Ask questions
Don’t only talk about the work yourself. Ask what caught their attention, what they see in it or where they could imagine it. When someone starts thinking about a work in relation to their own taste, home or experience, they often start to form a more personal connection with it.

5. Follow up
Not every sale happens on the spot. If someone is genuinely interested, exchange details and follow up afterwards with the information they asked for. And don’t wait too long!

And if you’re preparing for an exhibition or fair and want to make sure your presentation, pricing and sales materials are all in order, I’d be happy to help.

Finding gallery representation isn’t easy, and there’s no golden rule that guarantees success.

But if working with a gallery is something you’d really like to pursue, there are a few things you can do to make yourself easier to find and easier to understand.

1. Be visible
Show your work in the right places. Think group shows, open calls, fairs, studio events and platforms that are relevant to your practice.

2. Be prepared
Make sure your portfolio, artist statement, website and Instagram are up to date. If someone becomes interested in your work, they should be able to find the right information quickly.

3. Build relationships
Visit exhibitions and openings, follow gallery programmes and get to know the people behind them. A personal connection usually starts long before representation is ever discussed.

4. Be clear
Make it easy to understand what you make and what your practice is about. You don’t need to explain everything, but your work, statement and presentation should tell a consistent story.

5. Show your development
Keep sharing new work, works in progress and the context behind what you make. Let people see how your practice is developing over time.

And if gallery representation is something you want to work towards, I can help you get these things in order and research which galleries could be a good fit for you and your work.

Strong art deserves thoughtful visibility.

I support artists and galleries with strategic social media management - from content direction and storytelling to planning and consistency. Not just posting, but building a clear and professional presence that reflects the work behind it.

So you can focus on creating, while I take care of the structure.
