Does resilience mean having the courage to choose what’s right for YOU?

When you have hearing loss, you may hear lots of opinions about what you should do — including whether a cochlear implant is the right choice for you.

Everyone’s hearing loss, and circumstances, are different.

What works for one person may not be right for another.

Being resilient isn’t about following someone else’s path.

It’s about getting the information, asking questions, considering your options and then making the decision that feels right for you.

Resilience is trusting yourself, adapting when you need to, and knowing there’s always a way forward.

Hearing loss and potential barriers that come alongside deafness, can test a family or community. However, resilience can help you handle challenges without allowing them to take over family life.

It helps you adapt when communication doesn’t go as planned.
It helps you stay patient when something needs repeating.
It helps the person with hearing loss speak up and ask for what they need, rather than withdrawing or feeling frustrated.
Overall, it helps family members understand rather than assume.

Be kind to yourself because you won’t get every conversation right and there will still be misunderstandings and difficult days.
However, resilience helps you pause, find another way and keep communicating.

It’s not about avoiding the challenges — it’s about knowing you can work through them together.

Resilience means staying calm and positive when you face challenges, pressure, or unexpected situations. 

When something difficult happens, it is important to pause before reacting, take a breath, and think clearly. 

It’s more helpful to listen carefully, understand the situation, and then respond in a respectful and confident way. 

Being resilient does not mean ignoring your emotions. It means managing them so they do not control your actions. 

A calm and clear response can prevent conflict, build trust, and help you find practical solutions. 

In challenging moments, staying composed, communicating clearly, and learning from the experience helps you become stronger and more resilient.

Resilience and hearing loss. Hearing loss comes in many shapes and forms, and it’s worth remembering everyone has a different experience and journey with their hearing loss, hearing aids and implants.

Living with hearing loss can bring challenges that others may not always see—communication difficulties, frustration, isolation, and the need to constantly adapt.

Please bear in mind that hearing loss does not define who you are. 

Resilience means finding new ways to communicate, asking for support when you need it, and continuing to live, connect and participate fully.

You may hear differently, but your voice, your identity and your potential, remain strong.

The First Step!

Only when you decide it’s time, will it be time?
Sometimes we can spend months or even years thinking, “I need to do something about this.”
Maybe it’s your mental health, a job you’re unhappy in, a decision you’ve been putting off, or perhaps you’re dealing with hearing loss or a health worry that has affected your confidence and changed how you live your life.

It’s easy to wait until you feel ready.
‹When things settle down
 when I feel more confident
 when the timing is right.

But sometimes, you don’t feel ready first and then take the step. You take the step, and your confidence grows from doing it.

The first step doesn’t have to be huge.
It could be asking for help, talking about your hearing loss, finding a way to make a situation work better for you, making that appointment, having the conversation, or simply deciding, “I’m going to do something about this.”

Once you make that decision, you can put your time and energy into moving forward rather than staying stuck in “what if?”

And taking the first step doesn’t mean you know exactly how everything will work out.

It means you’ve decided you’re willing to try.

Sometimes the biggest change begins with one small decision:‹“I’m ready to take the first step.”

Living with a cochlear implant, like Charlotte, can bring opportunities, but it can also involve challenges and adjustment.

Hearing with an implant isn’t the same as natural hearing, and some situations can still be tiring or difficult.

Resilience is recognising those challenges without allowing them to stop you from living the life you want.

It can mean learning what works for you, using technology and communication strategies, speaking up about what you need, and being patient with yourself.

Some days will be easier than others—and that’s okay.

Resilience isn’t about hearing perfectly. It’s about adapting, accepting, and continuing to move forward. 
(I am profoundly deaf and wear bilateral bone anchored aids, and being resilient really does help).

“People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel!

A New Week, A New Start!

📖Lots of children, pupils and staff will be returning to school this week, in Scotland, after the summer holidays. For some, it may be their very first day at school. For others, it could mean starting at a new school, moving into a new year.

You may not be at school, but taking on new responsibilities starting a new job or moving house. 
Or you may be the parent waiting to see how the new day goes for your person.

👂For those who are deaf, this may bring additional challenges too — new people, new environments, communication needs and finding your place in a new setting. 

đŸŒ±Whatever you are facing this week, remember that it’s not always easy, and it’s okay to feel nervous, worried or unsure.

We can’t always choose what the day will bring, but we can choose how we show up. 

đŸŒ±Deciding how you want to approach the day helps you take charge of your reaction, your thoughts and your emotions.

đŸŒ±You may not be able to control everything that happens, but you can choose your response. 

đŸŒ±Take a breath, be kind to yourself and remember that you don’t have to have everything figured out straight away.

My Pizza Mindset takeaway!

What can making a pizza teach us about building a strong mindset?

We recently made our own pizzas, and it got me thinking about how similar the process is to building a strong mindset.

You start with the base — and it needs to be strong enough to hold everything you put on it.
That’s like your mindset foundation. When you develop helpful thinking, learn to manage your emotions and choose behaviours that support you, you build stronger self-trust.

Then come the toppings — just like life, some are expected and some are unexpected!

A strong foundation doesn’t mean life will always be easy. You may still feel worried, frustrated or overwhelmed.

But you can think:
“This might be difficult, but I trust myself to cope.”
When we made our pizzas, we followed a process, had fun and trusted we could adjust things if needed.

Life is similar. You can’t always control what happens, but you can build the foundation that helps you respond to it.

A strong mindset isn’t about knowing everything will be okay. It’s knowing you’ll find a way to cope, adjust and keep going. 🍕

Golf, Life & Your Mindset!

They say that it doesn’t rain on a golf course
 but it did today, despite the sunny forecast! 

I’m new to golf and still learning, and was playing with my husband, who can play. Some of my shots were missed altogether, some went straight and others found a tree or ended up in a bunker.

My husband and I teed off together, but we each took a different route to the green. Yet, we both got there.

đŸŒ±And that got me thinking
 isn’t life a bit like golf?
Everyone’s journey is different. Some people seem to have a straightforward path, while others encounter trees, bunkers and unexpected obstacles along the way.
The more relaxed I felt, and the more positive and kind my thoughts were, the easier my golf shots became.
Head down, focus, keep your eye on the ball and follow the shot through.
I am also profoundly deaf and wear bilateral BAHA so I pay particular attention to what’s around me because I don’t always hear warning messages like “fore”.

Life can be like that too. When we are kinder to ourselves, rather than criticising every mistake, the journey can feel more manageable.

And just like on a golf course, we never really know what someone else is navigating on their journey.

So don’t compare your round with someone else’s.

Take your own path, be patient with yourself, and remember: you can still get to the green, even if your route isn’t straightforward.
