Late post. Doorstep drops.

As always, tons of gratitude to the book gods at @aaknopf. Really appreciate the #bookmail.

Redemption by Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Lawrence Wright (@lawrencewrightauthor), tells the story of a group of cloistered nuns who visited and forged a spiritual connection to the condemned women on death row in rural Texas.

Certainly looks like an interesting read and definitely slides right into my growing queue.

@aaknopf

Ari Emanuel's Roll the Calls, at first glance, looks like a collection of anecdotes--some witty, some fleeting, some matter-of-fact, some does not make sense at all--put together to form an amusing memoir as a Hollywood power broker would. It was said that the character of the haughty agent in the HBO series, Entourage, was modeled after him.

@aaknopf

People look in the mirror and see themselves, stripped barren and raw, revealing the unvarnished and the most basic--sometimes, even the primitive. We think of Atticus Finch and we see his point across, and that we would see people for who and what they are.

Anand Giridharadas' (@anandwrites) Man in the Mirror, tells the story of two men, one of them would end up dead in a New York subway train--a Michael Jackson impersonator--and the shooter, an army veteran who acted on instincts. It is not difficult to understand the racial undertones behind the incident, and Giridharadas paints them in a way only an award-winning journalist would.

One of the recent books I am most excited about is Simon Sebag Montefiore's (@simonsebag_montefiore) The Cauldron. The tumultuous history of the Middle East is not without a plethora of causes, and most people are oblivious to them, while the reputation of such a large swath of land is mired in either the chaos of war or the violence of religious extremism.

Sebag Montefiore charts the history the and fleshes out the different characters that played significant roles in the shaping of the region.

Many thanks to @aaknopf for the #gifted copy. Appreciate much!

First is a short collection of essays and stories from a prize-winning author, and who composed and recited a poem during former Pres. Barack Obama's inauguration in 2009.

Signals Across Vast Distances - Elizabeth Alexander (@elizabethalexanderbooks @alexanderlizzy)

Next, is a historical fiction told in an epistolary form about an imprisoned witch accused of involvement in massacre in the Scottish highlands.

The Highland Witch - Susan Fletcher (@sfletcherauthor)

Finally, an exploration into a strange landscape that harbors different lifeforms and how it affects our world.

Recently read. John Berendt's book, Class Act, may sound like a literary manual on the propriety of "dressing well", but it isn't. The essays--some short, and others run a wee bit longer--that fill up the pages trace some kind of history, in tiny but amusing anecdotes. I must say that it's an enjoyable read, and dare I say again, short.

As always, many thanks to @ireadvintage for the #gifted copy.

In light of the Cornell University r*pe case that festoons the news and the ongoing outrage it creates, I must say this book is a must read.

Jon Krakauer's (@krakauernotwriting) Missoula is relevant now as it was when first published, and when the actual events in the book took place. I've read the book when it came out in hardcover years ago, somehow realizing the prevalence of such culture deeply entrenched in some universities across the nation, and hush-hushed to preserve a degree of academic and institutional respectability.

Many thanks to @ireadvintage for the #gifted copy; a sad and ironic coincidence to reissue the book in paperback, but in doing so, elevates its importance.

"What is the cost of lies? It's not that we'll mistake them for the truth. The real danger is that if we hear enough lies, then we no longer recognize the truth at all." Valery Legasov, Chernobyl, 2019.

Rewatched the miniseries after seven years, and I must say, that it is one of the best shows to ever been made and produced. So good that I sought for a copy on physical media. So good that I started reading (though I'm not quite halfway through it yet), Adam Higginbotham's acclaimed account of the disaster, Midnight in Chernobyl, that's been sitting on my tbr pile for years now.

But anyway.

In the post-truth world we now live in, lies are commodities consumed by a society inured and numbed by it. The lines that blur now become lines cleared by constant mendacity, that one could no longer distinguish the difference. It is sad and frightening to think, almost to realize, that people rarely begin to question, even out of curiosity, whether the things fed to them consist of anything but what is unquestionably true.

In the case of Chernobyl, political expediency--and survival--drowns the quiet clamor to know. The Soviet government, despite Gorbachev's liberal policies at institutional transparency with glasnost, masks the search for answers to escape a potential global embarrassment. As such, admitting to a fault is a portent of weakness, to a nation whose projection of power is its primary attribute, could certainly result in the erosion of public trust.

Chernobyl, I think, is the perfect case study of an empire's fall into oblivion. That lies, regardless of how deeply lodged it is into the consciousness of a social structure, has the capacity to create cracks that would ultimately tear the whole establishment down.

Late #Bookmail post.

These books arrived a week or so ago, but I haven't had the time to post them. I've already started on a couple of titles from the pile, adding to my bad habit reads and one that I finished a few months ago on ARC (Harel Shapira's Basic Pistol).

Dream Count would be my first @chimamanda_adichie, so I am looking forward to it.

As always, many thanks to @ireadvintage, @aaknopf, @pantheonbooks and @doubledaybooks.

Can you handle Mandel? Two books by Emily St. John Mandel (@emilystjohnmandel).

Finished Exit Party a few days ago. Slogged through it, only because work got in the way (LOL!). I've yet to start Station Eleven-- I'm sooo late in the party, I guess--heard good things about it when it came out a long time ago, but for some reason, didn't pick it up.

So there. ARC #gifted by @aaknopf (the book was released recently, go pick it up!).

New books!

As always, many thanks for this #bookmail from @ireadvintage @aaknopf and Anchor Books.

I'm close to wrapping up Robert Reich's fabulous memoir while simultaneously taking small bites at Robert Harris' Agrippa. I might have to put the ARC down and pick up the published release instead, bookmailed by the good folks at @doubledaybooks.

My bad habit reads at the moment. Now, if you're wondering why "bad habit", it's reading multiple titles at the same time, something that may be unorthodox to other people--say, a morally reprehensible practice.

So it begs the question: do you read more than one book at the same time?

Many thanks to @ireadvintage and @aaknopf for this #bookmail

Late #bookmail post. As always, tons of gratitude to the folks at @ireadvintage and @aaknopf.

Kurt Gray's Outraged is relevant and interesting considering how human interactions are shaping and happening nowadays particularly on sensitive subjects as religion, morality 9and politics.

Fed Up by Daniel Lieberman, a Harvard paleoanthropolgist, explores our often-puzzling question of diet and the food we eat. I must admit that my sedentary lifestyle--and my consumption of unhealthy (read: junk) food is beginning to take toll.

I haven't read anything by David Lagercrantz, but my occasional propensity for Nordic noirs will definitely see me pick up this book along the way.

From pages to reels. Perhaps the best one line spoiler in the history of cinema, Soylent Green mixes science fiction and crime thriller into a dystopian narrative that may be prescient down the line because of urban migration, global warming and the scarcity of resources. I've already seen the film a few times, part of one of my earliest memories of childhood film-viewing on videocassette (the others are Top Secret!, Cannonball Run 2, and Condorman, to name a few). It had become a cult favorite through the years, probably because of that famous line.

The film is based on Harry Harrison's book,Make Room, Make Room, also a dystopic science-fiction tale that revolves around an overcrowded and over-populated New York City near the turn of the millennium. Although written back in 1966, it predicts a city teeming with unrest. The book emphasizes more on the social conditions of the people unlike in the film, and uses that to add an element of crime.

I liked the film despite its flaws--I think it's a lot more effective as a Twilight Zone episode ala-To Serve Man--and the book for its urgent portrayal of a negligent society.
