🇺🇸With the 250th anniversary of this nation at hand, I would like to review our anthem. The average person maybe knows the first four measures by heart, if that. I want to fix this. Officially, only the first verse is to be used in public settings as the anthem, but the song has more.

🇺🇸The poem “Defense of Fort M’Henry” is four verses long, and was written on September 14, 1814 by Francis Scott Key as he watched the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British Royal Navy in the Battle of Baltimore. Key gave the poem to his brother-in-law Joseph Nicholson, who noticed that the poem fit the popular melody “The Anacreontic Song” by English composer John Stanford Smith.

🇺🇸Because the third verse is glorifying the deaths of the slaves that turned and fought for the British side, certain publishers of the song (including the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) skip the third verse entirely.
Perhaps to remedy the poem, poet Oliver Holmes Sr. wrote an unofficial fifth verse in 1861 during the Civil War, looking hopefully at he emancipation of slaves.

🇺🇸Finally, the unofficial sixth verse was written by Claire Cloninger, and was sung by Sandi Patty in 1986 for the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty.
