🎃 What's on my checklist? 👇🏻 🎃

Some costumes don't dance well. Makeup runs, costume too tight, accessories flying everywhere. All things to consider when dancing in your Halloween costume.

I definitely have a checklist when it comes to it.
1️⃣ The costume needs to move and breathe. If it's going to take on a life of its own, it needs to do these basic functions.
2️⃣ Manageable accessories. No bats, hats, or brooms flying off unless I say so.
3️⃣ Statement. Some like it sexy, others like it creepy, I like it striking and recognizable to those in the know.

If you can't move by yourself, you can't move with a partner.

In our classes we challenge our students with new solo work before going into partnerwork. Why? A few reasons!

1️⃣ It trains skills necessary for partnerwork without the pressure of leading and following.
2️⃣ It trains balance and teaches body movement.
3️⃣ It challenges memory and choreo retention.

Boy, I sure do have *stories*

Especially for performances. I only recently started performing on my own again. After many years of just concentrating on pouring into my team, I began getting on the stage again on my own terms 3 years ago.

And promptly broke my toe before the premier.

We don’t always get to choose our circumstances in performance. Rarely. If ever. But I've learned that in the face of everything, we rise.

That's a trained skill. To overcome obstacles. To lean into the story. It has less to do with your physical ability and more to do with your mindset. Train, regardless of how you feel. Rehearse, even on your worst days. There is room for self grace and balance, but if you practice making excuses then that is what you will bring to the stage.

My 9-5 folks can relate.

Sometimes it feels like a dream, that I get to dance in my evenings and my weekends. That I get to fill my time with beautiful people, friendships, and connections. That I am surrounded by like-minded folks, teams that strive to perform well together, a dance partner that has the same goals as me, community builders that only want a thriving community, and friends, who genuinely care about me and that I genuinely care about too.

And we love and laugh with loud music that we all sing along to. Tell me, is there any community as beautiful?

Of course we are not without problems. I hope we work to get better. Because this is too beautiful to spoil.

I also want to mention: Dance is a full time career, make no mistake. The verbiage in the slides are not meant to belittle folks who make it their full time career. Instead, it meant to highlight this particular feeling that I have, holding a non-dance 9-5 and also doing so much in dance.
