As part of the Sankofa Exchange Conference, we are proud to screen 'The Elements of Mutual Aid,' a four-part docu-series that explores how to transform our mutual aid efforts into deeply relational, strategic, and revolutionary practices. Each part connects to that day's theme.

🔥 Fire: Mutual aid is our spark of humanity, and we must defend it as those in power try to stomp it out. This chapter sets the series' foundation: What is mutual aid, how is it different from charity, why is it at odds with those in power, and can it help sustain our resistance to oppression? Meet supply distros in Detroit and Atlanta alongside unhoused families in Los Angeles reclaiming homes from the State.

🌊 Water: Colonization & capitalism are dams holding us back from each other. This chapter is all about tearing them down so we can let mutual aid flow between us. We discuss creating safer spaces, handling crisis without police, & navigating power dynamics, burnout, & conflict. Meet a self-defense project for trans femmes of color in Oakland, a group building crisis response skills in Detroit, and a community project combating patriarchy in Los Angeles.

🌳 Earth: This chapter looks at how to grow projects with strong, interconnected roots that can support communities. It explores how local needs and capacity should inform our projects, how we can network smaller projects over large areas, and how we can build infrastructure that outlasts crisis points. Meet a harm reduction project in Tucson, an international decentralized disaster response network, and a web of mutual aid centers in Puerto Rico.

🌬️ Air: Like the wind, our conditions are always shifting. The spirit of Air teaches us to speak, listen, strategize, and change with the seasons. This chapter explores decision-making, managing resources without hoarding them, weighing the pros and cons of formality and scale, and making our projects accessible.

Saturday, October 10, at 3 p.m., at CÉDA (2515 Rue Delisle)

Mutual Aid Means Fight Back

How can we prepare our networks and neighborhoods to live without the state? The codirectors of The Elements of Mutual Aid will share selections from their docuseries and discuss ways we can challenge our communities to deepen our mutual aid practices as we face climate and economic disaster. Mutual aid cannot just be a form of “circle A charity”; we must grow an accessible and anti-state movement that builds real autonomy. The directors offer the series as a tool and invitation to reflect, strategize, and onboard new people to the movement.

Cassa & Maroon are anarchist organizers based in Southeast Michigan. They’ve participated in international solidarity work through Mutual Aid Disaster Relief and have co-authored zines such as Red Flags: Before You Join That Org.

Le samedi 10 octobre, à 15 h, au CÉDA (2515, rue Delisle)

L’aide mutuelle signifie riposter

Before You Join That Org. taken in CÉDA by @the.elements.of.mutual.aid

We're heartbroken hearing that Curtis has passed from this world. They left us with their vision for abolition, one that they breathed life into alongside their community in Detroit. They showed us that abolition is a daily practice, that sharing skills for crisis and conflict support is more powerful than a few of us specializing in them, and that supplanting the police and prisons depends on our ability to weave rich nets of safety with our communities.

Curtis put their full life force and spirit into struggling for an abolitionist reality. We're tasked with carrying their vision and wisdom forward. Deep thanks to our friend for helping illuminate our path toward liberation. We're sending comfort and strength to all those they left behind.

Latest episode, Elementary Anarchy: A Discussion on the Elements of Mutual Aid out now!

The concept of mutual aid has become popularized in the past two decades as an approach to everything from disaster response to meeting basic needs. Even though the term mutual aid is not unique to anarchists, these projects have become a primary way that anarchists spend their time and intervene in the world. While this is promising, some of the roots of the practice, and some of its insurgent possibilities, have been lost throughout this popularization.

We sit down with Casa and Maroon to discuss their new documentary series The Elements of Mutual Aid. We discuss the roots of the practice in communities, the ways that mutual aid can escape simple political orthodoxies, and how it can form the foundation of not only a response to the crises that we are living through, but also a route through which we can build the capacity to fight for something better in the midst of collapse.

For more information on the documentary, including information on upcoming showings, go to https://theelementsofmutualaid.com/ or their ig page @the.elements.of.mutual.aid
