After the curtain closes, after the big performative charade of being thankful for your leftovers, hand warmers that will only last a few hours, things that may get damaged by the elements or eventually stolen by the city workers, after you hand them the little lumps of coal that may make survival a fraction easier and tell them a tone deaf "Merry Christmas" as if you've become their holiday miracle for extending some charity, after the rest of you go home and do your good deed for the day (for those of you who even did anything) this is literally what unhoused people see. This is their "Merry Christmas." You see them, but you will never SEE what they see until you walk in their shoes, especially during the loneliest time of the year when they are at their most physically vulnerable in the coldest climates AND emotionally vulnerable. Plenty of people never thought it would happen to them to walk in their shoes, though, until it did. Of course, those who benefit from putting people in these situations don't ever expect to end up in any type of bad situation, but that's not how God works either. You are not someone's entertainment, an old CD to take off the shelf whenever someone feels like it, nor are you the community trash can for people to dump their leftovers and things they wouldn't eat themselves off on. Thank you to all those who do what they can, when they can while maintaining the humility that they can't help everyone in the way they need to be helped without living in denial, believing they are changing lives in significant ways when they are helping in small ways that may add up but usually just keep people afloat in survival mode. The unhoused, homeless quality of life is still terrible even with provisions being gifted that keep them outside. Some shelters will give out tents and gear. We can do better than just that. Maybe it's not much more, maybe it's not more, but we can do better or at least different than the status quo of keeping the homeless outside. #housingfirst #mutualaidnetwork #mutualaid #mutualaidnotcharity by @the.gift.mobile
