On September 9, Moldovan 🇲🇩 president Maia Sandu, told the EU parliament that the September 28th election would be "the most consequential in Moldova's history." She went on to explain the bomb threats, paid protesters, and cyberattacks that marred her re-election in 2024. Like then, this election was fraught with disruption. In the weeks leading up to the election, 250 raids targeting a Russia-backed plot to pay people to commit voter fraud and incite street violence led to 74 arrests. Illegal Russian funds were funneled into two pro-Russian parties, both of which were banned from the ballot. September 28, election day, six bomb threats shut down polling stations across 5 cities in Europe and 1 city in the US. Russian cyberattacks targeting polling stations and state services shut down over 4,000 websites, and over 250 voting violations were committed at polling stations. Today is September 29, I am happy to say that Maia Sandu's PAS party has won the election with 50.2% of the vote, giving them 55 of the 101 seat in parliament. Meanwhile, pro Russian parties BEP, BA, PN won 26, 8, and 6 seats respectively. A 2nd pro EU party, PPDA, also won 6 seats. This is a major victory as securing a majority allows Sandu's government to operate without forming a coalition government. Congratulations Moldova. by @the.guy.sawyer
Today I want to touch on the Baltics - Latvia 🇱🇻, Estonia 🇪🇪, and Lithuania 🇱🇹. Their history is deeply relevant today as their struggles shaped their governments, their place in NATO, and because they stand as frontline examples of resistance to Russian aggression. In the early 1900s the Baltics were under Russian rule and were denied their rights to culture and self-governance. After World War I they declared independence only for that freedom to be crushed under the Soviet occupation of 1940. In June 1941 alone, about 34,000 Lithuanians, 15,500 Latvians, and 10,000 Estonians were forcibly removed from their countries. Later in 1949, Operation Priboi would deport over 90,000 people from all three countries. Despite the deportations, executions, censorship, and forced Russification, the Baltics refused to let the identities of their nations disappear. The Forest Brothers, composed of rebels from all 3 countries waged a guerilla war against the Soviet. History, songs, and literature were shared secretly in underground churches and the culture of these countries grew in defiance to the oppression they faced. In the 1980s the Soviet grip began to slip, and from 87-91 the Baltics rose in mass protest. The Singing Revolution gathered hundreds of thousands of people at concerts to sing banned songs, while the Baltic Way saw two million form a 370 mile human chain across the three countries. The movement reached a breaking point on January 13, 1991, when Lithuanians gathered to defend their parliament, and key sites from Soviet troops sent to crush their independence. The Soviets stormed the Vilnius TV tower, opened fire and drove tanks into the crowds of unarmed civilians, killing 14 and injuring hundreds. The massacre shocked the world and 8 months later the USSR collapsed, granting Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania their independence. The Baltics rebuilt their governments and by 2004 they joined NATO, securing protection and their place in the West. Their independence and security are still tested: hours ago, 3 armed Russian jets violated Estonia's airspace - highlighting again that these countries are on the front lines and their history matters. by @the.guy.sawyer
