Opened in 2009.. There’s nothing standard about The Standard High Line.
I visited and took these pics in 2014. Unlike many hotels, especially in metropolitan cities such as New York, the original Jonathan/André Balazs-era design language remains even today and most, if not all, of its very special design features are intact. No major reconstruction/ reconfigurations or shift in aesthetics for this beauty. Just a rigorous maintenance programme and continuous attention to detail ensuring a masterpiece such as this transcends the newer glitzier kids on the block .. this classic doesn’t kowtow to trends.. it sets them.
In my opinion a master class in hotel perfection. 🤍

So I actually have managed to achieve my minimalist fantasy home in the past (picture storage units bursting at the seams)….but I like ‘things’ and I’m a bit of a collector so maybe it’s more fantasy than reality for me as a lifestyle.
Ultimately I’d arrive home with some bonkers portrait in a gilt frame and the whole thing would go to pot!
Current living style…maximalism-light(ish)!
As a matter of consistency this has also involved embracing colour-max options!
When using a large mix of colour options the challenge is that it still needs to ‘land’ and make sense as a whole- there needs to be a relationship between the spaces forming a comprehensible visual narrative.
As an example
- the hallway at my place has 3 distinct colours, determined by architectural detail in the form of a picture rail, simple cornice and frieze with carryover from this central space into the adjoining rooms; The hall frieze is carried through to the bathroom ceiling and the hall ceiling colour continues through to the main bedroom ceiling.
- For contrast the dining room frieze and ceiling are treated as an up and over combo creating a different visual shape.
- The furthest apart spaces- the main bedroom and the kitchen- have links in the tanners brown (bedroom walls) and American walnut (kitchen cabinetry) tones.
Next room - Not turquoise… not lapis… maybe cerulean (???) 💙

The Anderston Centre Glasgow
R. Seifert & Partners, 1968–72

Preserving Brutalist architecture is one of the most complex challenges in modern conservation.

Whilst often described as eyesores, some of these concrete structures are undergoing major cultural re-evaluation and I’m so in!

Preston bus station near my childhood hometown is a monolithic presence I admired even as a teenager (on my way home from a Sat afternoon at the fishergate trying on swede footwear in Dolcis ). It - the bus station not Dolcis, was saved from demolition and is now generally considered more favourably.

Saving brutalist concrete structures often requires overcoming severe physical degradation, technical obsolescence, and public resistance and the pictured Glasgow structure, The Anderston Centre, is a prime example of amazing architecture that cannot be left to languish!

The pictured side of the centre is going to take one hell of a cash injection and I’m praying that it happens.

I took these pics a while back- 10 years ago maybe- and I dread to think what it looks like now. I find it heartbreaking!

If anyone knows of any active societies that save these buildings hit me up.. I’m in!

There’s something about the simplicity of this interior that’s stayed with me since I first clapped eyes on it
👀

These pics, taken by me, of Morgans Hotel which was officially the world’s first boutique hotel, located at 237 Madison Avenue in New York City.

It was founded by Studio 54 cofounder Ian Schrager as the first property in the Morgans Hotel Group. It opened in 1984 and closed in 2017 as part of a redevelopment programme turning this iconic hotel into prime location apartments.

My most memorable part of this hotel visit was being told that, during that particularly harsh winter, the Escher carpet in the foyer had to be replaced 4 or 5 times…Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase no expense spared. 😱

I love a junk shop and I also love religious imagery so of course I couldn’t help but have a swatch around this one in Ostuni, locally known as La Città Bianca with all its whitewashed buildings.

Beautiful Italy 🇮🇹 one of my favourite locations for sure.

The curtains that we had made when we moved in, have been remade with a less chunky lining and a new track and tape allowing a wave effect.
I’ve never been a fan of a short curtain but the radiator (as is often the case in old tenements) is under the window and with no other available wall space to relocate it it’s important that we at least get some benefit from its poor placement especially in the colder months.
The sofa, covered in a similar tone helps draw the eye away from the shorter curtain length. Generally happy with these and certainly saved a load of cash reusing them.
New roller blinds coming soon which will complete the finishing details.

There are houses and then there are houses ! Remains one of my favourite projects ever for sure.
Arts and crafts at its finest and a privilege to work on twice- Initially in 2014 and then refreshed in 2023- with a nod to the big fashion icons for this upgrade: wallcoverings/ fabrics by Jean Paul Gaultier, Christian Lacroix, and that amazing leopard rug by Diane von Fürstenberg.. the epitome of fashion royalty giving that touch of exquisite beauty and elegance to the most magnificent of homes.

Small space capsule studio at the oh-so-cool Zoku Amsterdam.. where 24m squared gives you so much more than you’d ever think possible.

Described by Forbes in the top 25 coolest hotels on the planet this brutalist powerhouse doesn’t disappoint.

Carefully selected finishes, monochromatic colour palette and cleverly designed storage solutions make it a design triumph.. it even has gymnastic rings in case you fancy doing a workout.

I particularly like the clever retractable stairs up to bed space.

I had a T shirt when I was about 15 that said ‘Italians do it better’…
I sometimes wore it out clubbing when in my 20s (crop top by that point 🫣 )

Here’s some shots of the city that holds the most famous annual interiors and design week in the world - although if you’ve ever visited I’m sure you’ll agree that every day in Milan is a design event!

Pics by me.

Banksy 23 - an exhibition I railed against attending (cos I felt it was just a load of hype ) until my pal suggested we went on the closing weekend (and at 1.45 am to boot).

The pieces themselves(!), but even more so, the curation and the thought provoking stories behind them, established the thing that maybe everyone else already knew, Banksy is a genius!

Even, on the way out of the exhibition, the invitation to add something and be part of his show with your own little banksy-esk graffiti, cemented the real meaning of such a generous artist.. we are all welcome.. we all have something to add and without participation art simply exists in a vacuum.
The message- go be creative and share it with the world, a message that feels more important now than it ever has before.

This weeks launch of the Rebuild The Mack (rebuildthemack.com) serves as a poignant reminder of what we lost 9 years ago in the second and fatal fire that destroyed this world famous landmark.

The long delays, with insurance wrangles and rising costs, have been as frustrating as they have been unsurprising.

I took this pic in 2013 as the controversial counterpoint Reid building neared completion and prior to the first fire that destroyed the library.
Having always thought it should be rebuilt in exacting replication, I now think it’s best to preserve the facade (which is the only thing left) and build something behind it that reflects the spirit of this famous institution and its even more famous Scottish architectural genius.
