🌍July 20th marks the 101st birthday of revolutionary political theorist, psychiatrist, and Pan-Africanist Frantz Fanon, born in 1925 in Fort-de-France, Martinique. He served in the Free French Army in North Africa during World War II and, like many Black colonial troops, came out of it with no illusions about who that empire was for. Living in Algeria, he treated both the tortured and the torturers, backed the independence struggle until he was expelled from the country, and went on to serve as an ambassador for the Algerian National Liberation Front.

From A Dying Colonialism in 1959, The Wretched of the Earth in 1961, and the posthumous Toward the African Revolution in 1964 he took up not just the politics and economics of colonialism but its psychological occupation, and insisted the dehumanization it produces cannot be reasoned away or reformed out of existence. A hundred and one years out, from Palestine to Haiti to the Congo, his questions are still alive in struggle for Black liberation.

A Russian oil tanker has broken through the US blockade on 29 March, and has entered Cuban waters, as Cuba receives fuel for the first time since January.

With no authority to prevent ships from passing through international waters, despite the illegal blockade and the seizure of vessels, the US announced that it was “authorising” the Russian oil tanker to pass. Despite all the threats, Trump seems to have backed down and now says he sees no problem with sending fuel to the Caribbean country.

The arrival of the oil tanker ‘Anatoly Kolodkin’, carrying 730,000 barrels of oil, is a lifeline for Cuba, but it is not enough to alleviate the suffocating pressure imposed by Washington. It is expected that other countries will take advantage of this breach in the blockade to supply Cuba with fuel.
