The Outer Veil & The ARCH-HIVE Present:

𝑀𝑂𝑅𝑀𝐴𝑁𝐼𝑇𝑌
An eclectic showcase of the breadths & depths of contemporary Mormon art.

Mormanity is our inaugural art show at @the.outer.veil. It is a “thesis statement” of sorts of the type of work we plan to show at the gallery: profound and sincere explorations of Mormonism that push boundaries in terms of medium, style, imagery, or subject matter.

We are delighted to show a wide variety of work by these incredible artists:

@eduardo.alvarez.art
@lisavalkyrie
@coreyegbertart
@tylergathro_studio
@danielgeorgephoto
@__scribes__
@karadawnhurst
@briankershisnik
@mormcore
@thread_light_district
@camilla.stark.art
@trvart

The show’s opening coincides with the gallery’s grand opening (see our previous post!), and will be on view through the end of October.

After over 100 candidates for a name, we are pleased to announce that our contemporary peculiar Latter-Day Saint art gallery will be called THE OUTER VEIL.

We wanted a name that evokes the real experience of coming face-to-face with the divine; a transformative experience that moves deep in your soul.

The concept of the ‘Outer Veil’ suggests something far away from the understood center of reality, beyond even the veil of forgetfulness. To peer behind that curtain is a daunting act, similar in many ways to making art.

As the team behind @the.ARCH.HIVE arts collective, we have always aimed to promote the “weird” mormon arts and artists that one could say don’t have ‘a place.’ After nearly a decade, one truth stands out: these misfit creators and their works do have a place, and one more expansive than we could have ever supposed.

The gears continue to slowly turn as we get this art gallery off the ground. We are excited to meet you soon at The Outer Veil.

The works of God continue,
And worlds and lives abound;
Improvement and progression
Have one eternal round.

There is no end to glory;
There is no end to love;
There is no end to being;
There is no death above—! taken in Provo, Utah by @the.outer.veil

A little mystery. A little revelation. Lemon Jell-O shots, taxidermy goats, neon flaming swords—and a whole lot of contemporary Mormon art.

In downtown Provo, Camilla Stark, Rusden Scott and LAZERos have opened The Outer Veil, a new gallery and gathering space growing out of their ARCH-HIVE collective.

With plum walls, pine-green trim, gilded fig leaves and a salon-style hang, the space embraces the strange and particular visual culture of Mormonism while making room for artists whose work doesn’t fit comfortably into either devotional art or straightforward criticism of the church.

“It’s different on purpose,” Scott says.

For their inaugural exhibition, Mormanity, the trio has created what Stark calls a “collecting of misfits”—a space for art that is challenging, sincere, self-aware and, occasionally, bizarre.

Join us on Saturday, August 1 from 3-6pm for a special preview event at The Outer Veil before our official grand opening.

Henrik Sorensen, a pseudonymous Mormon author (and twitter personality—if you know, you know) will be doing a Q&A and book signing his two books: “A Thin Black Veil”, a collection of Mormon horror short stories, and “Corsair”, a space opera with subtle Mormon inspirations. Copies of both books will be available for purchase at the event.
