Thanksgiving has always been a mix of everything we inherit: warmth, debate, laughter, grief, softness, friction, the complexities of the day itself, and pie. This year felt like honoring all of it.

We’ve been together 11 years, and somehow this was the first time we celebrated Thanksgiving the way we remembered it as kids. Turkey, gravy, stuffing… all of it was new for our children. We merged our memories, and with the alchemy of it all, a tradition was born, yet not the kind you cling to, but the kind that moves with you, offering flexibility and restoration.

Polaroids were snapped, menus were scribbled by little hands I never want to forget, school paintings slid into the margins. They’re now tucked into the family recipe book I’ve been building since inheriting both my grandmother’s and great-great aunt’s collection. One ledger book in particular catches my attention: 1950-69, Oakland, California, next door to my own childhood holidays in Berkeley. There are elaborate menus, recipes, guest logs, grocery lists & money spent. It feel like breadcrumbs across time, reminding me that memory is a kind of inheritance too. Scribble, paste, tuck - a southwestern edition is born 📚

I think a lot of this year’s ache to circle back to something vaguely familiar came from the fog finally lifting. After years of survivorship, multiple moves, grief, lost grandmothers, hopes that didn’t unfold the way we imagined, and the season of being far from the many hands that once held holidays with us, I felt myself ready to return. Not to an old version of me, but to the one who made it through the woods these years, intact, worn in, a heart patchwork quilted together by layers of complete and utter let downs sewn in with triumphs and quiet but revered initiations.

After months of waving, smiling and blowing kisses to you I finally got to take you out on our first date - 10 years ago to the day. I had wanted to get to know who you were for so long and so we began that journey after our first date to the lookout on the island - and never looked back. I’m still as madly in love with you as the day I first laid eyes on you, more than the day I first kissed you, more than the day I married you. Hard to believe 10 years have passed and it somehow still feels like it’s just beginning. I’m honored to get to know you, friend you and love you @the_ma_southwest ❤️

S I L E N T N I G H T

Several months in the making but it may have felt like years. Life took an unexpected yet welcome turn. We decided to trade the city in one state for a small town in another. Expanding business in real estate to a second state while simultaneously learning a new profession and moving a family is not for the faint of heart. Henry Ford famously said ‘whether you think you can, or think you can’t - you’re right.’ The last handful of years we’ve been through a lot as a family, as a couple and as individuals. These experiences have shown us what is truly important to us in life. Instead of second guessing ourselves, we trusted ourselves, held fast, put our heads down and put in the work to be where we are today. The days have been hot, trying and loud. Now the nights are filled with satisfaction, peace and trust that we are on the path that is right for us. ✨

Fun fact: Tucson’s axis is Stone Ave and Broadway Blvd (starts on Congress St). What does this mean you say? Any address west of Stone will be a W designation. Any address east of Stone will be a E designation. Any address north of Broadway will be a N designation and any address south of Broadway will be - yep, you guessed it - a south designation. Why do I need to know this Pa? Well, with today’s technology you probably don’t.
.
However, this was extremely handy information to have in my previous occupation of being a UPS driver. Not the fun fact but the fact that I was a UPS driver here gave me priceless insights on all of the wonderful neighborhoods that our beautiful city Tucson has to offer. What’s my favorite way to experience all the amazing pockets Tucson has to offer you ask? It’s not in the hot brown truck anymore - it’d be via bicycle!

This is a reminder to NOT live quietly! I quietly achieved 100 days of no alcohol today. It’s been great. I’m a better person, husband and father without it. More energy, more patience, more witnessing instead of reacting, more bandwidth for everything in my life.
.
But I’ve tried to downplay it hard. Why should I make a big deal out of a self inflicted negative habit that I’ve flirted with (and steadily dated) for almost two decades? Even though I’ve been quiet about it, doesn’t mean I should. Every single improvement in life should be celebrated whether you were starting with a self inflicted deficit or not! Your drinking as well as you not drinking will affect those around you. So speak about it! It’s not being loud in a holier than thou sense, but being loud in the vulnerability.

‘Who am I now?’
‘What is partying?’
‘It’s hard to go to xyz without drinking!’
‘It’s hard to do xyz without drinking!’
‘I spent too much time drinking!’
‘How do I celebrate now?’
‘What can I do to make up for lost time?’
.
It’s insane how normalized a lethal drug can be for the purpose of socializing, celebrating and even simply unwinding. Life initially felt different but the commitment of completely saying nah, that’s not who I am anymore - made the decision easier every day. Is it still weird? Fuck yea! Am I weird? Fuckin’ right!
.
