WITH HASAN IN GAZA, A Conversation with Artist and Filmmaker Kamal Aljafari.

This week, I'm honoured to have Kamal Aljafari for a conversation on his new work, With Hasan in Gaza (2025), a film threaded by Aljafari's three tapes from 24 years ago when he visited Gaza. We discussed the start of his craft in making films with archival materials, the complex nature of memory, cinema as a tool of resistance, and so much more.

"Three MiniDV tapes of life in Gaza from 2001 were recently rediscovered. What started as a search for a former prison mate from 1989, led to an unexpected road trip from the north to the south of Gaza with Hasan, a local guide whose fate remains unknown. A cinematic reflection on memory, loss and the passage of time, capturing a Gaza of the past and lives that may never be found again."

On AMBUSH with Yassmina Karajah (@yassminakarajah).

Full article out now.

Yassmina Karajah is a Jordanian-Palestinian filmmaker whose work leaves an indelible mark: sometimes rupturous, sometimes quiet, always charged with emotional truth. AMBUSH was recently named as one of TIFF's Canada's Top Ten in 2025.

Her other films have also screened at major international festivals, including TIFF, AFI, Melbourne International Film Festival, and MoMA’s New Directors/New Films. Her short Rupture (2018) was named to TIFF’s Canada’s Top Ten, acquired by The Criterion Channel, and won the Grand Jury Prize at Slamdance, where she became the inaugural recipient of the Russo Brothers Fellowship.

In this conversation, we return to the origins of AMBUSH, filming in her hometown of Amman, Jordan, and the collaborators who shaped it. What lingers longest, however, is Karajah's delicate sensibility: how the world and its people inform her craft.

With Director & Writer Justin Ducharme on Debut Feature SEVENTEEN.

In this electric yet delicate portrayal of three young, queer Indigenous sex workers living in Vancouver, writer-director Justin Ducharme looks to tell a story that transcends what they do and the world they inhabit. What brings this story to a deeper level is his unyielding insistence on capturing the intimacy of Indigenous womanhood, the intricate interior lives each character carries, and how their worldviews shape the rhythms of everyday life.

In Conversation with Director Gessica Généus on MARIE MADELEINE.

Returning to directing with MARIE MADELEINE, Gessica Généus is a Haitian filmmaker, actor, and writer whose work reckons with memory, identity, spirituality, and the complexities of Haitian womanhood. Her feature debut, FREDA, premiered at @festivaldecannes in 2021.

The film follows Marie, played by Généus, a sex worker who fiercely guards her independence and has no use for anyone else’s idea of salvation. Her brothel sits directly across the street from a fledgling evangelical church, where Béonard Monteau plays Joseph, a preacher’s son whose rigid certainties begin to loosen the more time he spends in her orbit. Blending Haiti’s evangelical fervour, Vodou-tinged spirituality, and the everyday pull of desire, the film becomes a bold, tender plea for tolerance.

In this conversation, Généus speaks with Thanh about what it means to ā€œreturnā€ to oneself after holding this story so intimately for 15 years, whether such a return is possible at all, and how she disciplined her vulnerability to, as she puts it, ā€œput myself in the most vulnerableā€ position to make MARIE MADELEINE.

Conversation with Alexandre Franchi & Bilel Chegrani on L'AUTRE.

What happens when the confinement of the body begins to encroach on the mind, becoming so intense and agitating that it permeates the space around it? This year, acclaimed Canadian filmmaker Alexandre Franchi returned to the big screen with L’AUTRE to explore this very tension, and, as he puts it, the ā€œcrudenessā€ of one’s fragility when they are confined to a bed. A darkly comic thriller loosely inspired by his own experience battling cancer, the film turns the hospital room into a space where physical immobility dissolve into psychological unease.

Ahead of the film’s premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, I sat down with director Alexandre Franchi and actor Bilel Chegrani to discuss Franchi’s decision to tell such a personal story through comedy and thriller, their collaboration within the confines of a hospital room, and the many layers of the human condition the film opens up for excavating, probing, questioning.

Interview with Ang Geck Geck on her tender debut feature: AH GIRL.

Ang's filmography orbits around the worlds children inhabit, and the ways they learn to navigate a world that isn’t always kind to them. Ang is attentive to those subtle, at times unassuming moments when children are asked to understand life before they have the language or experience to articulate it. Yet within these moments, she insists on leaving room for wonder, preserving that sparkle even ever so faintly, through the particular tenderness with which she creates these worlds.

Ahead of the film’s Canadian premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, Ang joins Thanh to talk about the visual language of childhood, her own growing pains, and the ways she approaches performance and the interior worlds of her characters. In the end, she sends a message to her younger self, whom she has loved and cared for so tenderly.

Conversation on (0, Infinity) Short Film with Mar Sudac, Kayla Hoff and Sayali Upadhye.

It’s not often that we have the opportunity to sit down with three key creatives of a project and dive into where one person’s vision ends and another’s sensibility fills in the gaps, allowing the story to flourish, and to understand why filmmaking is such a laborious process that truly takes a village.

In this conversation on @zeroinfinityfilm, Mar, Kayla, and Sayali walk us through all the roads that led to the film’s fruition. From unearthing the process of floating in and out of perspectives, mediated through different mediums and visual textures, to navigating the constraints of producing a short film, we delve into the continuous conversations between these three artists and their team that brought the film to life.

Chi Mangia Solo, Muore Solo | Who eats alone, dies alone.

Anchored in an Italian proverb passed down from generation to generation, and taking its form across many different cultures where the kitchen and cooking become the beating heart of a family and its traditions, is a short film written and directed by Italian-American filmmaker Francesco Aram Zenati. On a night where everything seems emptied, voided by the absence of their mother, an estranged pair of siblings reunite over a meal while cooking their mother’s recipe. Unbeknownst to them, it becomes more than just a meal.

In this conversation, Zenati unearths his process of making the film, from bringing his grandmother’s handwritten recipe into the beating heart of the narrative, to designing the home, and reflecting on his own career over the past decade. The film stars Victoria Pedretti and Philip Ettinger.

Celeste In The Summer: A Conversation with Writer & Director Hobby Holmes (@hobbyholmes)

In 2018, Holmes planted the first seeds for what would become Celeste In The Summer: a pure love story set against an idyllic countryside of lush greenery, where day slips into night and summer feels endless. As the story evolved, Holmes began introducing elements of a genre that has long been integral to his artistry: science fiction. In genre-bending, he carves out a space for a more nuanced exploration of the relationship between love and technology, questioning not only how technology reshapes the human experience, but also how it can become sinister to the detriment of our own humanity.

In this conversation, we get a better glimpse into the creative process behind Holmes’ Celeste In The Summer, his inspirations, and the messages it wants to tell.

Holmes is a London-based director and creative director whose work centres on themes of memory and imagination and is grounded in intimacy, surrealism and human experience. He is also the co-founder and creative director of @mahogany, a globally recognized home for authentic musical expression and visual storytelling. Working with artists including Billie Eilish, Hozier, Florence Welch, Leon Bridges, Ludovico Einaudi, Olivia Dean and many more, Holmes’ artistry transforms performances into captivating cinematic experiences, where music and visuals converge to explore all sensory experiences.
