A sitar can have anywhere from 11 to 13 tarab strings, each tuned to a specific note of the raga being played. When you strike a swara on the main string, the corresponding tarab string hums back in sympathy, and sometimes a whole cluster of them responds at once, creating this shimmering, layered afterglow behind every note. It’s not an echo, it’s a genuinely separate string physically vibrating in agreement.

No other classical instrument does quite this. The sarangi and sarod have their own sympathetic strings too, but the sitar’s tarab system is unusually extensive and tuned so precisely raga by raga, which is part of why a sitar has to be retuned for every different raga performance. Western instruments have nothing equivalent built in, a piano’s sustain pedal gets you overlapping resonance but not this tuned, string specific sympathy.

It’s also why sitar recordings feel so hard to replicate digitally. That trailing shimmer isn’t reverb, it’s physics.

The more I find myself surrounded by AI, the more I return to what is deeply human…. the quiet intimacy of holding my sitar, feeling every string, every note, every raag unfold through me.

It’s not just sound, it’s presence. It’s me, fully involved, fully listening, fully creating.

While so much can be outsourced, this is where I choose to stay…. in the process, in the practice, in the truth of my art.

Arey muh toh band karo uncle! 🤪🤭
Hahah, this was so random…. @ashok_tabla was playing around with a groove on the tabla, and mid-way it suddenly started sounding like that part from Tumse Milke. I just looked at him like… wait, we have to try this.

No plan, no pressure, just pure fun… and it sounded so good šŸ˜„

I used to wait for the perfect take before sharing anything. The cleanest note, the right light, the version I’d never want to change. Spoiler: that version never came.

Art doesn’t have a finish line. There’s always one more meend to soften, one more phrase to sit with. But the music only starts living once someone else hears it.

So this is your sign to stop polishing and start sharing. The sketch, the song, the half-finished piece in your drafts. Someone out there needs it more than you think.

What are you holding back right now? Tell me below. šŸ¤

I don’t know if she’ll ever pick up the sitar. That’s not the point. I just hope she grows up knowing that the things you love deserve your time, and that practice isn’t punishment. It’s how you honour what matters to you. šŸ¤

People often ask when you stop being a student. Honestly? I hope I never do. The day you think you know enough is the day the music stops teaching you.
Being a student this long has given my practice patience, humility, and a kind of listening I didn’t have at 20. The stage is just where it shows.
Grateful to my Guru, to everyone who came, and to this instrument that keeps humbling me. ✨

I’ve been playing the sitar since first grade. My guru used to say an instrument carries every hand that ever touched it before yours.

The sitar’s lineage runs through poets. Amir Khusrau is often credited (though historians still debate it) with shaping instruments that led to what we play today….

And then there’s the part of the story that never even makes it into books. Right now, in small workshops in Miraj and pockets of Kolkata, craftsmen are hand carving sitars the same way they have for generations. No machines, no assembly lines. Just wood, gourd, wire, and hands that learned this from their fathers and grandfathers. Most people who play the instrument have never seen where it actually comes from.

Every sitar has a lineage. Most of it never makes it past the people who lived it.

1. Patience that doesn’t come from anywhere else
You can’t rush a raag. It teaches you to sit with something long enough to actually understand it.

2. Discipline without needing motivation
Some days you don’t feel like practicing. You do it anyway. That habit spills into everything else.

3. A relationship with silence
Music isn’t just the notes you play. It’s knowing exactly when not to play.

4. Focus in a world built to distract you
There’s no multitasking with a sitar in your hands. Just you, the strings, and the moment.

5. A connection to something older than me
Every raag I play has been played for centuries. I’m just the latest person carrying it forward.

6. A teacher who shaped more than my music
My guru didn’t just teach me technique. Years under one person teaches you humility.

7. A part of my identity that has nothing to do with what I do for work
No matter how busy life gets, this is mine. Untouched, unrushed, completely me.

The sitar didn’t just give me a skill. It gave me a way of being.
