This project was the most difficult and longest hand caned project I’ve ever done. This was with me for so long, it felt like saying goodbye to a friend when I finished and had to give it back. Scrolling back to find photos scattered between photos of my life, just creating this post was difficult, too many photos, wrong orientations, 4 saved drafts and a few weeks later I’m finally pulling the plug to post. I think maybe I was a bit emotional about it and it made choosing the photos hard. I had to take it back and forth with me so I could get it done faster, progress seemed fruitless, hours of work and it didn’t feel like it made any difference in construction. I hired and on the spot trained friends and family to help just to weave even a few rows in to save even the smallest amount of time. Trying to finish it was a marathon. I put a photo of me sitting next to it at the end for scale. The finishers did a lovely job staining it and putting it back on the frame. Thanks everyone who helped me with this, I’m really proud. by @the.wicker.witch

A really neat chair. I was able to help work on and fix this up alongside the guys for the Caning Company of the Northeast Arc. We did both the seat and the back. by @the.wicker.witch

Putting nails in to open up stubborn holes to make the boarder easier to weave in place! This needs to be done very carefully, while everything is thoroughly soaked. You need to be extremely careful that the nails don’t rip or tear the strips of cane as you hammer them in. Often moving the nails in circular motions before or during hammering to avoid the absolute destructive horror of breaking strands and ruining all your handwork and having to reweave lines or sections in place or worse, redo the entire chair. When expertly done however it can take a lot of frustration out of the final steps. by @the.wicker.witch

Finished this set of 6 Shaker Tape chairs! Originally done in danish cording, I replaced the weave and made them a lot more comfortable by adding foam inserts. They look so beautiful, It was so fun to learn the herringbone pattern. Thank you to my lovely customers for giving me the opportunity to work on this project! by @the.wicker.witch

Scroll to see the chair in progress! This chair fought with me every step of the way. It was rather invasive to repair. I was wrestling with it using my entire body the whole time, staining and soaking my hands and clothes. It covered me in dust, broken pieces, paint chips, tears, and self doubt. I learned a lot of lessons in this project, I’m so happy I finally finished and didn’t give up. by @the.wicker.witch
