i think we should add “experiencing cuteness” to the base of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. #urbanfarming #mastergardener by @the.winter.gardener

i saw this growing against a Maglebys and it was funny to me because plants are funny and cool. i imagine the landscaping crew thinking “this squash is so cute” so not only do they leave it, they help it fit in with the rest of the landscape design. i was tempted to take one but now following the Green Rule. #reapwhatyousow

i plant garlic in oct for a harvest next june.

this year i added a few steps as a trial. here’s my process:
day before planting
-broke bulbs into cloves (i had 20lb).
-soaked bulbs in 70% isopropyl alcohol for 10 min. i fit 10lb of clove and enough alcohol to cover it in a 5 gallon foodsafe plastic bucket.
-drained and evaporated for a few min.
-soaked in vermicompost tea + garlic fertilizer (5-2-2) overnight.

planting day - this took 3 hrs while my uncle kept yelling at me to take a break.
-mixed biochar into soil (about 2 gallons per 40’ row).
-mixed nutrimulch into soil (about 3 gallons per 40’ row).
-planted 6” apart, 3” deep.
-poured vermicompost tea over planted bulbs.
-covered rows with straw (worst part. use your most straw-proof gear).
-staked mesh fence over straw.
-watered in. by @the.winter.gardener

immediately found a shortcut to prepping 20lbs of garlic bulb for fall planting. and obsessed with the crunchy sounds.

after this i tried a new method of sterilizing the garlic bulb for 10min with isopropyl alcohol.

then i soaked overnight in a mix of compost tea from my vermicompost mixed with garlic- specific fertilizer (5-2-2 for my fertinerds out there). i’ll try to make a longer video explaining more.

farming hack: take naps. growing food and raising animals is filled with daily aesthetic moments. this bed of henbit was too soft to pass and the little flowers were such a vibrant color. 💜 grateful to see the seasons change. 🌎 by @the.winter.gardener

Visiting one of my favorite hikes at @capitolreefnps to present at the best educational conference @naturetotheclassroom ✨

I talked about worms, plants and amateur radio of course.
🪱🌿📡

Thank you @naturetotheclassroom for the amazing experience 🙏 and the book by Rachel Carson where I found this quote, The Sense of Wonder: A Celebration of Nature for Parents and Children by @the.winter.gardener

This year I’m taking notes on what interventions I use on the fruit trees. I haven’t pruned in a few years so I need to slowly remediate our fruit trees back into a productive shape.

🌳

I’m taking pics before pruning and then again afterward.

Feb is pruning time for apples, pears and round plums. Need some easy pointers to get started?

🍎Take out watersprouts or branches that go straight up
🍏remove branches that grow in toward the center of the tree
🍎clean your tools before cutting a different tree or plant
🍏remove less than 20% of a tree’s live wood per year by @the.winter.gardener

Normally i’d be working with winter crops right now but I’m waiting for an irrigation issue to get fixed. Reviewing old photos and pics. I found this moment where i tried to sleep outside in the garden. My corn from @nativeseedssearch was over 7’ tall and i had planted amaranth and sunflowers. I went inside to get my sleeping bag then got too scared to go back outside. I dont know about ghosts but i just get scared out there alone. 👻🏕️ by @the.winter.gardener

these will grow into large plants 🥬that i’ll transplant outside into the winter garden. i used @fourseasonfarm soil recipe for mini blocks then i used @donnygreens method for sprouting microgreens to get pretty close to 100% germination. 💛 #wintergarden #farmeramy #urbanfarm by @the.winter.gardener

I’m experimenting in this small cold frame to see how little water i can use during the winter to grow food. The compost i’m using is rabbit manure which is high in nitrogen but lower in phosphorus and potassium. I’m running irrigation water to help speed composting and I’ll add a handful of worms then cover it with cardboard to encourage the worms to FEAST. I’m starting seeds now and near the end of Sept I will plant those seedlings. I’ll be planting lettuce, chard and spinach as well as radishes which I’ll direct seed. 🥬

Alt text: video shows irrigation water flowing onto composted manure while titles flash onscreen which read as follows: First, remove dead plants/weeds. Second, add compost. Third, prepare a cover.
