This abandoned grain elevator has been sitting in the middle of this Tennessee lake for 80 years.....Why is there an abandoned grain elevator sitting in the middle of a lake?This is the Old Danville Grain Elevator, also known as the Danville Transfer Station, one of Tennessee's most unusual abandoned places.Built in 1914 along the Tennessee River, the six-story concrete structure was designed to transfer grain, cotton, iron, limestone, peanuts, and other goods between river barges and railroad cars. At a time when river transportation was critical to commerce, the facility served as an important shipping hub for the region.Everything changed in the early 1940s when the Tennessee Valley Authority constructed Kentucky Dam and created Kentucky Lake. As water levels rose more than 50 feet, the town of Danville and much of the surrounding area disappeared beneath the water. Hidden in the San Francisco Bay, This Island is home to some of California's most fascinating abandoned buildings.Long before it became a state park, this site served as a major military installation and immigration processing center. Beginning in the late 1800s, the island was developed by the U.S. Army, and later became the site of the an Immigration Station, often referred to as the "Ellis Island of the West." Thousands of immigrants passed through these buildings between 1910 and 1940, many facing lengthy detentions and interrogations before being allowed into the United States.During World War II, the military expanded its presence on the island, constructing barracks, hospitals, and support facilities. When the war ended and the military decommissioned the base in 1946, many of these structures were left behind. Built as a hospital to serve those who were deemed insane by the state court, this institution held over 2000 patients at its height in the 1950s. A.self sustained community was built around the hospital, including its own farm which produced food for all staff and patients.Due to changing perceptions on mental health facilities in the 1970s, the state cut funds to the hospital. A partially completed luxury beachfront Resort in the Caribbean. In the middle of last year, legal disputes caused the construction to halt. The hotel chain decided to back out and now this property is controlled by the island's government. Located along the Monongahela River in Swissvale and Ranken, PA, the Carrie Blast Furnaces (No. 6 and 7) stand as the last remaining non-operational blast furnaces from the pre-WWII era in the United States.Built in 1884 and operational until 1982, these furnaces were the heart of the Homestead Steel Works. At its peak, the site produced over 1,000 tons of iron per day. Abandoned beach front Resort in Fiji. This Resort opened in the 1950s one of and was one of the first resorts to bring foreign tourists to the island.
