The story of how we became next-door neighbours with supercar icon, McLaren Automotive. 🏎️

In 2016, when McLaren set out to reshore production of its carbon fibre chassis, they partnered with the AMRC.

Our engineers worked closely with the automotive giant on key composite technologies, introducing a new manufacturing philosophy focused on efficiency and scale.

That homecoming created over 100 skilled local jobs, secured critical UK supply chains and unlocked cross-sector innovation.

Crucially, it provided the blueprint for McLaren’s first facility outside Woking: the McLaren Composites Technology Centre (MCTC) in Sheffield, right down the road from the AMRC.

Machining tough metals like titanium and stainless steel creates insane heat and wears out cutting tools fast.

But by combining supercritical CO2 cooling with micro-lubrication (MQL), our engineers, working alongside @theuniversityofsheffield and the @universityofleeds, and supported by EPSRC funding, have unlocked major breakthroughs for high-efficiency aerospace manufacturing.

This three-year project has yielded some top headline results:
• Forty per cent faster milling speeds on titanium without wearing out tools faster
• Residue-free parts, no greasy film left behind, making life way easier for machine operators
• Used less than half the CO2 compared to previous industry tests
Science translating straight into shop-floor speed.
