I was looking at this carving again the other day and found myself studying the edges. Look closely at where the lines meet, how the diamonds repeat, and how consistently the pattern carries around the pillar.

With geometric work like this, there is very little room for error. A line slightly out, an angle slightly off or an edge that loses its definition would immediately interrupt the rhythm of the whole piece.
Every one of these lines was hand-carved in cement. This particular pillar was carved in two days.
That is what I keep coming back to when I look at Rustum’s work — the design, certainly, but also the discipline and control behind it.
From a distance you see the pattern. Up close, you begin to see the precision.

Fair question. A machine is faster. No argument there...

However, speed isn’t always the only thing a project is asking for. When a relief is carved by hand, decisions are made as the work develops — where to deepen a line, soften an edge, change the rhythm, or allow light and shadow to work differently across the surface. That judgement becomes part of the finished piece.

Hand carving isn’t the answer for every project. Sometimes CNC, moulding or another production method makes perfect sense. When the brief calls for something genuinely bespoke — a focal architectural element, a cultural reference, restoration work, or something created specifically for that space, the hand of the sculptor brings something different.

Yes, building projects have deadlines. Craftsmanship still has to work within that deadline, so perhaps it isn’t really hand versus machine. It’s knowing when efficiency is the priority and when the project calls for something more individual.

What if one of South Africa’s most recognisable symbols became part of the architecture?

This Heritage Day, we imagined the protea reinterpreted as a monumental hand-carved architectural relief.

More than our national flower, the protea speaks to so much of what makes South Africa extraordinary — the beauty of our land, our diversity, resilience, renewal and the potential of a nation continually unfolding. In our national Coat of Arms, it represents the beauty of our country and the “flowering of our potential as a nation.”

Even in nature, there is something beautifully symbolic about it, the King Protea can survive fire and regenerate from underground growth, making resilience and renewal feel especially fitting. Its layered form, intricate centre and sculptural character have long made us wonder what it could become in the hands of a relief sculptor.

So, for Heritage Day, we created this concept visual — imagining an oversized protea carved directly into an architectural wall, where changing light and shadow would continually reveal the depth and detail of the work.

A distinctly South African symbol, interpreted through contemporary craftsmanship and architecture.

We haven’t carved this one yet.
But we would love to!

Happy Heritage Day, South Africa ❣️

This, is one of those proposals we’re really hoping gets a “YES.” 🤞

Created for a private home in Green Point, The Landscape Wall takes its inspiration from the mountains, coastline, ocean and changing light surrounding the home.

The flowing relief draws from topographic contour lines—turning the idea of landscape into a sculptural architectural surface.

The first two images explore the concept in layered mineral tones, shown in both daytime and evening light.

Since one idea often leads to another, we couldn’t resist exploring a completely different interpretation: the same flowing relief in a quiet, warm ivory finish.

One is expressive and full of colour. The other lets light and shadow do the talking. The final direction is still being considered—but this is a wall we would absolutely love to bring to life.

Which would you choose: colour or tone-on-tone?

From prototype to possibility.

This is our African Flame prototype. It's an original hand-carved design by The Carving Studio.

The second image explores a simple idea: here’s where this design language could take us.

Is it an exact enlargement of the original carving? No! We want to be transparent about that. This is an AI-assisted application concept. The original prototype has a more interlocking geometry; at architectural scale, the concept has simplified and reinterpreted it into something more fluid and flame-like.

This is part of what excites us most about bespoke work. A prototype doesn’t have to be the finished answer. It can be the starting point for a design developed specifically for a wall, a curve, a space and a client.

We’d love the opportunity to take African Flame from a small hand-carved prototype to a full-scale architectural surface — developed specifically for the space it belongs in.

Perhaps the next version won’t be a concept.

We’d love to do this. Any takers?

This is not our work — it’s an inspiration image we came across and exactly the kind of project we’d love the opportunity to take on.

Imagine an entire wall transformed through hand-carved pattern, depth and shadow — created specifically for the space.

So, if you have a wall waiting for something extraordinary…

Give us the wall. We’ll bring the carving.

Who wants to create one with us?

Same rose. A completely different mood.

In Ivory & Gold, our hand-carved Rose Tile takes on a softer character — warm, understated and quietly luxurious.

And when one becomes many, a small hand-carved detail can transform an entire surface.

The second image is an application concept, exploring how the rose could be repeated across a bathroom feature wall — turning an individual carving into a richly textured architectural surface.

Use it as a single decorative detail, repeat it as a tile, or let us explore the design at an entirely different scale.

A darker take on the rose.

Our hand-carved Rose Tile reimagined in charcoal with softly rubbed silver highlights — a finish that brings out every edge, shadow and irregularity of the carving.

And then we wondered: "what if we changed the scale"?

The second image explores that idea, taking the rose beyond the individual tile and imagining it as a bespoke vertical architectural feature.

A small decorative detail now becomes a statement installation, the design can be adapted in scale, colour and finish to suit the space.

FROM PROTOTYPE TO POSSIBILITY.

What begins as a small hand-carved prototype can become something entirely different when imagined at architectural scale.

For this concept, we explored our geometric relief in deep emerald green, introducing touches of rich gold across the raised carving to catch the light and accentuate its depth.

The result?

A bespoke bathroom feature wall where the surface becomes part of the atmosphere of the space.

Slide 2: The hand-carved prototype that inspired it

The beauty of working with an original carving is that the possibilities don't end with one colour, finish or application. Each can be adapted to complement the architecture and character of a particular project.

For architects and interior designers looking for something that can't simply be selected from a catalogue — we'd love to explore what we could create together.

Today feels like a good day to take inspiration from Mother Earth. 🌊
The layers in the rocks. The weathered surfaces. The colours. The way sunlight catches every ridge and changes the shadows.
Nature doesn't try too hard to be perfect — and perhaps that's exactly why she's so beautiful.
At The Carving Studio, so much of our inspiration comes from observing the natural world — its strength and softness, its imperfections, its ability to change and adapt and the beauty it creates along the way...how fitting since it's Women's Day :-)
A celebration of the women who create, build, nurture, lead, adapt, persevere — and leave their own mark on the world.
From a chilly winters day @dangersbeach in St. James Cape Town, Happy Women's Day from The Carving Studio. 🤍

What if a pillar became the most memorable part of the room?

Structural columns are usually designed to disappear.

Wrapped in plaster.
Painted.
Hidden in plain sight.

But what if they became part of the architectural language instead?

This project explored how a simple structural element could become a sculptural feature through handcrafted relief, allowing geometry, light and shadow to change the experience of the space throughout the day.

Every line was carved by hand into reinforced cement.

No CNC.

No machine finishing.

Just craftsmanship, patience and an enormous respect for geometry.

Sometimes the most memorable architectural moments aren't created by adding something new.

They're created by looking at something ordinary... differently.

Would you leave a column as it is, or make it part of the design?

Most people focus on the finished result.

We think the story is even more interesting.

Every cut you saw in this pillar was carved by hand. Not by CNC. Not by a robot. Not by 3D printing.

But perhaps the biggest surprise wasn't that it was hand-carved...

It was the material.

This entire architectural pillar was carved directly into cement, transforming an everyday construction material into a bespoke architectural feature.

For us, craftsmanship has never been about decoration. It's about taking an ordinary material and creating something original, timeless and worthy of the architecture around it.

Because memorable architecture isn't always created by adding more.

Sometimes it's created by carving deeper.

Would you have guessed this was cement?

👇 We'd love to hear your first impression before you reached Slide 4.
