A play on the senses if you will.
Now, I’m not one to conform, hence the extremely late post to whatever you may consider this post to relate to, regardless in which part of the world you are from and whatever season you’re experiencing. This is quite a slap-dash sort of poem which I initially intended to be a prose but naturally my mind can’t help but lean towards rhymes. And yes, I am well aware for anyone who takes a swig of ginger ale certainly possesses an iron throat!

Okay, so I am definitely the furthest thing from a botanist, but when a friend told me about this particular plant, my attention was captivated for months!

Ramonda Serbica — as the name suggests — is native to Serbia. (However this plant can also be found in parts of Greece, Montenegro and North Macedonia) This remarkable plant, also called “The Phoenix Flower,” has the ability to photosynthesise even after months of desiccation.
This makes Ramonda Serbica a poikilohydric (desiccation-tolerant) plant. During extreme dehydration, it shuts down photosynthesis temporarily.

In other words, during periods of drought, its leaves may shrivel and appear completely dead, when in fact, they are dormant. Once water — or even moisture — makes contact with the stem, leaves, or petals, the plant begins to rehydrate rapidly and comes back to life.

It typically grows in shady rock crevices with high moisture levels or on limestone cliffs. I know the first image doesn’t depict that, but I simply wanted to pay homage to this glorious plant.

You hold your own hands for there’s no one to hold yours.
Initially wrote this as a poem on love or rather a lack of it but it fitted well under this poverty theme. Poverty need not be restricted to material possessions. Poverty of the heart is real.

Poverty poem #VIII

So I tried my hand at a Villanelle (five tercets with a concluding quatrain) in iambic pentameter. It took a very long time to craft, especially this being my first try at a metered poem.

Opted for a regal touch as poverty has no real timeline and it has been present ever since wealth was established.

I have been exceptionally inactive on this platform. Life happens. I am sorry for not engaging as frequently as I used to. I will try to be more active in future.
