Story of @the_futon_shop is inspiring

Started by Suzanne Diamond in 1976 who made a natural fiber futon for her newborn baby in her apartment and then began offering them for others

• 100% natural fiber nontoxic ingredients
• Plastic and petrochemical free
• Handmade in California

Amazingly comfy furniture as well - we recently received a Cocomat Bed from them (made from coconut coir, natural latex, and organic cotton) with tatami mats made from organic rush grass, and a Japanese Tatami bed frame made from FSC certified honey oak.

Looks beautiful and gifts us with deep sleep

The best bed

Will make another video soon sharing more about this bed setup and why it is so wonderful.

Grateful for the Futon Shop

A young mother wanted better for her baby so she made a mattress and started a company, and here we are 50 years later, and I cannot believe I get to hear her story in person.

While we were there, I got to interview the founder of the futon shop. There is so much rich history here and I just had to share some of it with you.

Women are inspiring. Mothers are inspiring. The creativity that flows from both is endless.

We’ve been sleeping on a mattress from @the_futon_shop for over a year now and the benefits have been incredible. While they have been completely incredible, my husband does need something with a little bit more support, so we went out to see if we could find that. And I had no doubt that we would. And we did.

Since switching a year ago, here is what we noticed:

• My back pain has improved significantly, and I wake up feeling so much better.

• Sleeping on a firmer, more supportive surface has made a noticeable difference in how my body feels.

• We love knowing exactly what we’re sleeping on, especially with the natural materials like organic cotton and wool.

• Having our mattresses closer to the floor has made our bedroom feel more accessible and practical for our family.

• We’ve learned that comfort looks different for everyone! While I absolutely love our current mattress, we’re transitioning to a thicker option that better accommodates both my husband and me.

Small Homes Don't Need More Space, They Need Multifunctional Furniture ‼️

The Colpus gives you a roomy three-person sofa during the day. And at night, it opens into a 55-by-79-inch double XL bed.

You can also switch between sitting, reclining, lounging, and sleeping positions.

And the built-in storage box gives you a place to keep sheets, blankets, and pillows out of the way.

So instead of buying separate furniture for sitting, lounging, sleeping, and storage, you can get all four in one.

Because when space is limited, every piece of furniture should work a little harder.

Follow for more smart ways to make a small space work better!

If you know me, you know how much I love our Japanese-inspired floor bed setups. 🤎 When we needed more storage in the kids’ room, I really didn’t want to give that up.

So we upgraded to these tatami beds! We still have the tatami mats and natural mattresses we love, just with a little more functionality for our family.

They are the PERFECT Montessori beds for kids! I love that they’re an investment that will grow with our kids for years to come, while giving us the extra storage we needed.

Comment SLEEP and I’ll send you our exact 5 inch shikifuton and tatami setup!

One of the biggest reasons we switched our family to Japanese floor mattresses was because I wanted to stop waking up with back pain. We had spent years sleeping on traditional mattresses, and I was genuinely surprised by how much better my body felt after switching to a firmer, more supportive sleep surface. Almost a year later, my back still feels so much better, and I honestly cannot imagine going back to what we slept on before.

We sleep on The Futon Shop’s 5 inch shikifuton paired with tatami mats. Our mattress is handcrafted in the USA using natural materials like organic cotton and wool, rather than relying entirely on conventional synthetic foams. I love knowing what we’re sleeping on every night, especially with our children sharing the same setup. The firmness, the natural materials, and even the versatility of being able to move our mattresses around have made such a difference in our home. We do have to air them out regularly, but that’s a small part of caring for something we use every single night.

Getting to travel to California and see how these mattresses are made gave me an even greater appreciation for the quality and craftsmanship behind them. I’m so thankful we had that opportunity, but even more thankful that we took a chance on a completely different way of sleeping almost a year ago. 🤍

If there’s one piece of furniture I’m especially intentional about in our home, it’s our mattress.

Because think about how much time we spend on it.

Seven… eight… nine hours a night.

And while we usually think about sleep quality in terms of things like our bedtime routine, light exposure, stress and temperature, there’s another part of the equation we don’t always talk about:

What are we actually sleeping on?

Our environment is part of our health, and indoor dust can contain chemicals released from household products and furnishings. Some of these chemicals have been associated with endocrine, reproductive and developmental concerns. PMID: 37419195, 33624349, 26841288, 27623734.

That doesn’t mean we need to fear our homes or eliminate every chemical.

It means that when we’re choosing something we’re going to have prolonged, close contact with every single night, I’d rather choose thoughtfully when I have the option.

That’s one of the reasons we love The Futon Shop.

Our king mattress was gifted to us by The Futon Shop, and we specifically chose it because of the materials and their approach to making healthier sleep products.

And now, as we prepare to bring our little girl home, it feels even more meaningful to create a bedroom that feels comfortable, peaceful and thoughtfully made.

Because we spend so much of our lives in our homes.

And our health is shaped by more than just what we eat and how we exercise.

It’s also shaped by the environments we live, sleep and recover in. 🤍

Thank you to The Futon Shop for gifting our growing family our king mattress, baby mattress, pillows and couch.

Finally showing you guys my new house and how I furnished it! 🏡

All my furniture came from The @the_futon_shop , and one of the things I really love about this company is their approach to making furniture.

They focus on natural and organic materials like organic cotton, wool, natural latex, hemp, and coconut fiber instead of the synthetic foams and petrochemicals commonly found in furniture.

They’ve been handcrafting furniture in San Francisco since 1976, with a big focus on sustainability, quality, and creating a healthier home environment.

I wanted my new space to not only look good but feel good to live in, and I’m really happy with how everything came together.

If you’re looking to furnish your home with beautiful, thoughtfully made furniture, definitely check out The Futon Shop.
