This community amazes me! The Good Loop joined Rivian at the Waterfront in San Diego for a swap on Saturday September 5th. The community showed up in a big way — we sold out 500 RSVPs in less than 7 hours, swapping roughly 5,000 pieces of clothing and keeping them out of landfills! As part of the event’s impact, we donated 11 bags of clothing to The Alpha Project, an organization in San Diego dedicated to supporting people facing homelessness.

Since 2019, The Good Loop has welcomed 20,000+ swappers and diverted tens of thousands of gallons of clothing from landfills while redistributing donations back into our most vulnerable communities. I’m proud and grateful to keep building experiences that make sustainability tangible, joyful, and accessible.

We celebrated our Earth Day swap early - with 600 RSVPs in just two hours! Our community is amazing! Thank you to our incredible hosts @sunbum, who we couldn’t do this without! To our creatives collaborators who made the event extra special, @kornelija.art and @lunasolphotobooth - and @isabelspoonermartinez for wonderfully capturing the event! To all of our volunteers and friends who endlessly support! We love you all and are so proud of the impact we’ve made together!

Roughly 8, 32 gallon bags of remaining clothes were donated to our neighbors in need at the Women’s Resource center!

Our community swapped an estimated 6,000 pieces of clothing with each other, diverting this from the landfill and into each other’s wardrobes! Breathing new life into loved pieces!

Alumni Spotlight: Get to know Makenzie Lowe ‘14, founder of @the_good_loop, a community clothing swap movement embracing sustainability and the importance of reusing. ♻️💚

“In 2025 alone, our community reused 28,500+ garments, prevented over 58,000 pounds of carbon emissions, and kept more than nine tons of clothing out of landfills.

I’m Makenzie Lowe (she/her), UC San Diego Class of 2014 and founder of The Good Loop — a community clothing swap movement making sustainable fashion accessible to everyone.

At UC San Diego, I studied International Studies with a minor in Business Marketing. My time there deeply shaped how I think about environmental challenges and the role communities can play in solving them.

One of the most important lessons I took from UC San Diego is that the people most vulnerable to climate impacts are often the ones who contribute the least to the problem. I also learned about the Triple Bottom Line, a business model that prioritizes positive impact for all involved. These concepts have guided my work ever since.

As I learned more about the environmental and social costs of the fashion industry, it became clear that the most affordable options are often the least ethical. That tension inspired me to create another solution.

In 2019, I founded The Good Loop - a free community space where people swap gently loved clothing, choosing a more sustainable way to shop by circulating what already exists in our communities. The swaps are intentionally inclusive and accessible, and all remaining items are donated to local shelters.

Since launching, we’ve hosted 20+ swaps with partners including @rivianofficial, @prana, @sunbum, @theecologycenter, and @westfieldutc, where they built a pop-up store for us in honor of Earth Month in 2024 and 2025.

Looking ahead, my goal is to help businesses and organizations build solutions through circular models.

My advice to fellow Tritons: follow what sparks your curiosity and purpose. Some of the most meaningful work begins when you start small and build alongside your community.”
